Both my hi tone and low tone horns have quit on my 72. Are the horns for our Skylarks unique to them or would horns for other GM A bodys be the same in appearance and mounting bracketry. I've already verified the relay is working and I'm getting good voltage to them but neither make a squawk, Grabbed another set off a buddys parts car and they're both dead as well. I see hors for 64 to 72 GM A bodys on EBay but the brackets do not appear the same.
I have a couple sets of those.I would double check before sending them out. That would be for your peace of mind and mine.BrunoD.
The problem I have is never using the horn, so then the vibrating contact oxidizes over and won't conduct. Its a good idea to blow the horn occasionally to clean them. If that is the case, I use 120 VAC to break thru the oxide. With the horn safely insulated on the bench, I briefly connect it in series with a 150W 120V incandescent bulb. The bulb should light, breaking thru. If the contact doesn't buzz at all, I might increase the series current to a 750W electric heater. Since the whole thing is electrically hot, its dangerous to touch. Bruce Roe
the horn relay on my '72 gs, failed in may 2012, and smoked the horns. i purchased a pair of new horns and a relay from the parts place. the new horns were the same as my originals but the mounting brackets were completely incorrect for the buick. i removed, by drilling on my drill press, the old brackets from my originals and had them mig-welded in the correct position to the new horns. all is well now.
Test the horns on a car or tractor battery. Run a ground wire from the negative terminal on the battery and use and alligator clip on the bracket. You just then touch the horn connector to postive and you will get a spark and the horn should sound if it is good. Make sure the ground is good. It make take a couple of tries. I have tested boxes of horns this way to eliminate the bad ones. Too strange the both went bad. ---------- Post added at 01:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:23 AM ---------- Also when testing horns a good one should make you jump when it sounds. If it does not it is weak.
