I tried to do a search on this,but couldn't get the correct information. On a 71 GSX where should the hood tach be? I see some photo's with the tach just over the hood scoop, some in between the scoop and the edge of the hood, some are completely in the black stripping, and I have seen others were most of the tach is in the stripping and just the outside of the tach is in the body paint. I believe the hood stripe is about 7 1/4" from the hood edge at the tach location. The outside edge of my tach is 7" from the edge,which would put it in between stripe and paint when the car finally gets painted. I know I should have measured from the tach hole,but I didn't and the car is in another location. This is the way I got it.Any help as always is appreciated.Thanks.
old topic here....... I just received hood tach from Parts Place ....they have slightly different specs on location ....they have the hole at 4 1/4 (4 " will work though) and center from left of hood is 11 1/2 inch from center and I believe 18" to center of hole from rear edge .. TPP specs put it more forward like and about 2" more toward edge of hood o No: I'm confused now
I know the GSX stripe specifications are in the 72 service manual. I wonder if the tach hole location is in there too? The 72 book is the only one I dont have.
a top view picture shot of a complete GXS hood would help.... the rear grill of hood and scoop area would give good idea searched other pics and its hard to tell imo the best measurement and easier would be from the underside of hood ....bcs you have small measurements from the framed opening.
Frank,it may be that the repo tach needs a larger hole because the bottom part is larger than the original. The diagram shows dimensions from the edge of the circle not the center. I know it still will be a off a little. I looked in my 71 book,but it only showed the tach hook up.
I guess I will go the Andrew way then ... this way I can put their names on the tach if its wrong:bla: btw ..where they been haven't seen em lately Tom ..I never seen or sat in a GXS before ...just curious ....when your sitting behind the wheel,is the tach directly in front of you or center of steering wheel ?
Mine isn't a real one and the person who installed it before I owned it didn't measure it,so mine is off. When I had it painted we realized that and had to compensate. Mine is more in front of me,which is the way I like it.

Andrews lurking in the background mmmmmm not saying that what you have is wrong ....just that the difference is almost 2" off from TPP's instructions .... ..from the rear of hood measurement is no big deal ..its kind of close but that measurement from left of hood is very noticeable . the Andrews location ... 15 1/8 " from rear & 11 1/2 from side " both on edge of hole the TPP location they say 18" from rear and 11 1/2 " both centered here it is on hood ......it wont show that well in pic but pay attention to location differ by the rear grill openings at rear ...in the Andrews setup the right side of hood tach is near the 2nd grill slot..and the edge of tach is on edge with the hood scoop with instructions from TPP its near the first grill slot ..and of course the distance from hood scoop is farther as well **NOW I need someone with original hood tach to take a look at hood tach and see where its at/whereabouts in relation to the rear grill slots on hood ...a full top hood pic would be also even better ....or even a pic of tach in place from under the hood I'm not a perfectionist ...but I am putting a hole in a straight GS hood :beer
also on the TPP diagram there is a line thats on an angle something about edge of hood ....to me the only thing it resembles is the angle of the side of hood corner .....this I dont know what its for or what its referring to exactly o No:
The curved line represents the curve of the rear edge of the hood. From the center most point of the rear edge of the hood make line going to the fender. This line is where you get your measurement from.
Shane ....Im dumbfounded with that part of diagram and your explanation.. explain it so I can understand it .....or draw it for stupid man
From under the hood, the hole should be inside the area that the hood insulation fits in. If you have it too far over, you'll be in the area where the lip that holds the insulation in is. Kinda hard to put down in words. Hopefully it makes sense. The TPP hole may be more correct from the pics. I'd be interested in seeing where it winds up from underneath
Here you go. Originally that instruction sheet was going to be printed to scale and the manufacture printed it on 8.5" x 11" paper... ou: It would make more sense to you full size.
yea Jason ....I understand from underneath ....both measurements work for that ....its just that one is more on one side than the other ...
yes ...the thing should be on full size .... ..hence more people like your tachs :Brow: ok it makes sense now .....Thanks Shane so from my original two circles on the hood .....they would both line up about the same forward and aft location..... all I have is the issue of left or right on the hood (2" difference)..... and yes it seems that TPP lineup looks more correct ...but I have nothing to compare to .. *Again : any of you original GXS guys/gals can post a pic of top view of hood including the rear grill area so I can use as a guid .... or look at my pics of hood and tell us which way looks correct ....
coming to think about it ..both holes will be less than 2 " in difference bcs in the Andrews hole it calld for a 3 3/4 " hole and I drew it for 4" and its edge to edge .... TPP calls for 4 1/4 " but 4 " will work
Honestly I think it is suposed to be some what centered in between the body lines on the hood. Look at the picture I attached and you will see what I am saying.
