Hi everyone! I purchased a 1970 Grand Sport hood yesterday for my 71 Skylark and now as I start making plans on having the hood stripped down and repainted I have two more questions. 1. Where is a good place to buy the Hood Scoop Grills? My hood is missing them. I saw that Year One has them listed for $96 each (ouch!), and Poston has them listed for $39 each (reasonable price but are they cheap quality?). 2. When I take my hood to get the old paint stripped off - I heard that sand blasting may warp the hood or detroy the hood scoop grill holding tabs. I heard that glass beading or media beading was a better choice but sand blasting might be okay if the person doing the work worked on hoods before and used less pressure when stripping the paint. sandblasting! Well Ive been a bodyman for 20 years and yes if your useing high pressure you'll mess stuff up a nother hassle to deal with is the mess it seem no mater how long your blow it off it never gets clean I would suggest first soap and water wash then use some laqur thinner to get the oils off (the cleaner the better sanding,on your big flat surfaces use a DA with 36 grit it will take it right down clean on the bottom side use the da where you can and a angle grinder with scoth brite roll locks or some of those black clean and strip pads remember to primer asap.Ray
Chris; I would not sand blast the hood. I have a friend that has a shop and does a lot of classic cars some very expensive. Body parts are usually media blasted or hand stripped. Frames, rears, rusted parts, etc. are sand blasted. Sand blasting can easily warp body parts.
