Hood Nosepiece vs Hood

As you guys may remember, I had my 72 GS repainted in May 2009.
The hood is now being repainted due to a paint crack. When i removed the nosepiece, they were several areas on the hood where the paint is either worn away or the nosepiece edge has cut the paint. That area is also being refinished.
Anyone have suggestions as to some material that i could place between the nosepiece and the hood? Maybe a piece of clear mylar attached (?) between the metals?
    What can i do?

Gerry 3M makes an adhesive stone / edge guard that would work well for what you are describing.
Paint supply and some auto parts stores carry it.
Crystal clear applied like a decal.
