Hi guys. '68 Riviera... I lubed the hell out of the hood hinges and the hood now opens and closes easily, but it's wonky going up and down - like, it's able to rock side to side like a boat. And the rear edge of the hood, next to the windshield cowl, still needs to be pushed down by hand - like 3" worth. I figure this is common on older cars, but is it fixable? Springs weak? Some adjustment to be made?
Had this happen in my 70 GS. My Back left corner of hood sat lower than the fender. Wound up being the hinge was old and loose at the pivot joint. Hence the side to side movement. I bought a set of good used hinges on here and it solved the problem. I’ve also seen other members recommend a hood hinge repair place. Don’t remember the name, but I’m sure if you search the forums, you’ll find it.
I was having the same issues with my hood . I had SMS Auto Restorations rebuild my hinges . Very happy with the results ! https://www.sms-auto.com/Home.html
All good info, thanks guys. I'm not so much concerned about the wonky side to side stuff, more about why the rear edge won't go down completely on its own. I can push it down, but it's a PITA. Hinge repair isn't a bad idea, but not cheap (understandably) and I'd have to have my hood off of the Riv for a time. At the moment, not the best solution for me.
Also, does anyone know what other years/models are the same hinges? (In case I try to find used replacements.)
Maybe that’s the Willie guy I’ve heard good things about him, of course not cheap. Am guessing Riviera hinges are by themselves I have a very nice set of 69-70 Electra 225 hood hinges, Hollander #111.
Yes, http://www.hoodhingerepair.com is Willie. He did my '64 Skylark door hinges. Very nice guy, and excellent workmanship.
