Can you fit a holley carb under the hood if you use an SP1? I know they are a smidge taller than the factory intake, and I don't know how much clearance there will be under the hood.

Do you have to get a special air cleaner or something?

Bob, I'm going thru the same problem right now.'70 GS,SP1 w/Therm-quad. Everything fit under the hood, but performance was down, removed the K&N Filter housing and she picked right up! I tried a smaller 2" tall filter,a little better but still restrictive.Best performance so far is no filter at all. This is a street car so I don't like the idea of no filter. My only recourse was to get an aftermarket fiberglass hood w/stageII scoop installed. I ordered it from VFN,should be here in a couple of weeks then I'll be able to run a very tall filter and a 1" carb spacer. Some guys are making your combo work without mods to the stock hood.Drop-base filter housing, etc.:Smarty:

Been looking at this myself... How about one of the K&N filter tops??? that in conjunction with a 2in tall element should give enough flow... You are using an SP1 with a 1 in. spacer and a 2 in drop base right???

    I had an SP1 with a 1" spacer

    DIDNT work.

I had to run no air filter.

You might be able to get away with it, if you get a drop base small air cleaner and no carb spacer but even then it will most likely touch the hood insulation which you'll want to trim up a bit.

    Good luck guys.

What drop base aircleaner are you using?
    Thanks Rick

I figured a 1" spacer was completely out of the question- I was just hoping that I could fit a Holley under there without mashing the hood, and still use an air cleaner.

Are some Holleys shorter than others? Or are they all the same height?

had a holley and SP1 combo for a while... DP 850 holley 4150 model... drop base air cleaner (holley brand you can buy at autozone), no spacer, and a 3in. K&N. worked great till the holley puked. had no probs with hitting a stock ram air hood.

    HTH.

How much was the hood? I'm going that route soon. Did they already have scoop placment measurements already, or did you supply that?

    I Second that.

I have the same problem Josh ran in too. I tried a 1" spacer. :af: Didn't work. Tried a milled down spacer to 1/2 ", didn't work. :( I can get away with just a K/N 3" ( drop base )filter and that's it. The next time I head to the track, I'll just run a 1" phenolic spacer under the carb, and see if she picks up a little. When I get back home, the spacer comes off and the air filter goes back on. That's about all you can do, assuming that you want to keep your hood free of holes.

    Rob,
I bought the Bolt-On fiberglass hood and the Stage2 scoop from VFN,for additional $ they will mold it right in,I gave them the measuments that other members gave me from what they had,12" from the rear of hood to the rear of scoop. Total cost with crating $630.00. The freight charges run $125-$150 shipped thru ABF Trking. They have a local terminal 10 min.from my house, they'll call when it comes in and I'll go pick it up.They will deliver to my house for an additional $40-$50,but someone must be home to sign for it.
With my old B4B and T-Quad I was running a 1" carb spacer and a 14"X3" K&N with a drop base and a K&N Filtercharger Top. It all fits now, without the spacer, but performance suffered. To make it run right I have to remove the Filter. Thus the reason for the new hood&scoop. With the new hood I can run the 1" spacer and a 6or7 inch filter element.I'll fabricate a sealing system to the carb and be good to go.I HOPE:Smarty:

I know it only looks like about an inch or inch and a half difference, but would just would not run as well with the filter on,once filter is removed it's a whole new animal!! Anyway that's my story and I'm stickin to it!

    Keith,
I tried that, still did'nt work. I mean it worked, but the car was way down on performance, the only thing that made a big difference was running NO filter housing or filter.

Have you tried to rejet for the aircleaner? It seems to me that you are running to close( rich or lean) so when you put the aircleaner on it is to much.

I had a real problem when I first setup my new motor with the thermquad. It wouldn't pull past 4800 with any power. I would check the plugs and they would look ok. Got mad one night at the track was running 12.80's at 105 but couldn't get it to come out of the hole. Took off the carb from my truck (powered by a Buick 455) and went 12.80 at 97. It was too small. Finally talked to someone and they told me that with the new electronic ignitions it is real hard to read the plugs. Started to lean out the secondary's and it just kept going faster.

Another thing you need to check is if the aircleaner lid is interfering with the secondary air valve.

    Good luck.

Mike. Thanks for the advice, good tips and I've tried them all.
The stock hood actually rests on the top of the filter housing when closed.I do have an K&N filter top.I'm convinced I am chockin the hell out of it with O clearence on the intake[top]
Right now, I'm just waiting for the new hood. When I do go out I just don't run the filter. We'll see what happens:Do No:
