Having some issues on a 770 holley street avenger. Poor fuel down carb to get it to start and will run just fine. Can drive it for a few miles no issues. Shut it down and wants to run on. Then wont start again until fuel is poured down the carb. Took carb apart cleaned it as it was full of gunk. Replaced acc pump diaphragm, adjusted floats to be at the correct level. Car does get hot quick, mainly because i need to replace the water pump and flush out radiator. Adjusted timing to be at 20* which was better than it was, was at 5* I know nothing about this engine as it was in the car when we took possession. Going to be switching to a Quadrajet over winter but need to rebuild that first and swap intake. Just want to get this driving for remainder of summer. Any ideas on what to look for. Im more used to Quadrajets than Holleys as this is my first one. 1967 GS400 Performer intake, headers.

Heat could be a factor . Timing ?
Gunk in carb not sounding good . Temporarily run a clear plastic fuel filter and keep an eye on it . You didn't mention it but any time you have a problem and pull the bowls pull the metering blocks also and carb spray passages and blow the crap out of them . Pull pump nozzle and clean that also . Make sure plunger is in there also and freed up .
Are you using a carb adapter on a OEM cast intake ? Vac leaks ?
If you have half a day and a willing buddy with a good running combo swap swap carbs and see how they react .

No buddies in area with holley carbs. No adapters, and added an inline fuel filter. Didn't find any vacuum leaks. Fuel pressure shows 5.5 it looks like. Vacuum gauge shows 14 when hooked up to carb and was what got max when I made adjustments.

I just talked with Holley regarding ethanol in gas degrading rubbers seals and causing gunk in the carburetor.
Accelerator pumps get effected the worse, and of course gas sitting you your gas tank is a serious issue too.

Sounds like the Holley needs a complete rebuild. If you go with a Qjet, there are members in V8Buick who are experts rebuilders.
I'm sure someone will come up with their names.

High heat water temp is another major issue.
    (1) Timing (total advance far advanced)
    (2) Check your thermostatic clutch fan, might be worn out.
    (3) Radiator may need to be rebuilt or replaced. Vet
