Holley spreadbore woes, qjet needed!

Ok, So Spring has sprung and I'm wanting to drive my 1970 GS350 that I just bought in November and have been working on all winter long. Here's the beef: The car has a Holley 4165 spreadbore carb on it that needs replaced. (Leaking throttle bores, sticky secondaries, etc etc...) I want to replace it with a qjet. That having been said, I cannot for the life of me seem to be able to find a rebuilt 7040244. RockAuto (which I do a LOT of business with) has an Autoline rebuilt available (I'd have to eat the core charge) but it shows as the same application for a 1970 455 car. Other options are currently available on Ebay, but include a 1971 for a MT car (7041245), or numerous 704240 (70 455) options. The trans has been replaced with a TH400, and I've installed a throttle pedal switch for the kickdown on it, so I don't need any trans cable hookup of any sort. Anybody here able to steer me in the right direction would be a friend indeed.

    Thanks!

    Mark

Unless you absolutely have to have the correct number carburetor, you can contact Ken at Everyday Performance and he will build you a Q-jet that is correctly calibrated to your engine. I would steer clear of anything on E Bay or Rock Auto. Remanufactured carburetors are worse than anything you could put on your engine. Get it built right from the Get Go. There are several other guys here that could build you one.

    Larry,

Thanks for the quick response. I've sent Ken an inquiry.

There is a MT NOS carb for 1970 GS350 available. Any differences between the MT and AT carbs that would preclude me from buying it? It's a 7040245 instead of the 244... Unfortunately I can only find a spec sheet for 1971 Buick online, and other than the man metering jet being one size larger on the 71 MT carb, and the fast idle camn numbers being different, every other piece is the same spec...

The MT carb won't have the same bracket for the accelerator cable, it will not have a place for the trans kick down cable

Like I stated earlier, the car has a TH400. No kickdown cable. I've run a switch on the throttle pedal assembly for the electronic kickdown...

Yours might not need it but if you look at the brackets they're different, if you can't find a rebuilt one I have a good core I don't need.

I thank you for your offer! I'm trying to get her on the road asap, and this stupid leaky Holley is the last stumbling block. I'll certainly let you know. Hopefully Ken will get back to me first thing Monday.

Mark, you might want to go with the later model quadrajets, '77-'79 bop castings, better overall, electric choke and and highly tuneable. Just remember all q-jets are factory emmissions carbs and require mods to the idle/transfer circuits for performance applications. There are a few q-jet experts on this site. Cliff ruggles has a book if you want to do it yourself, he is also very helpful if you call. Good luck

+2 on avoiding anything commercially "remanufactured". The quality control on those in the past 15 years or so is PATHETIC. We quit taking them in here, they are "butchered" beyond belief. You really don't need a 1970 specific core, any Buick q-jet from 69-74 would work equally as well. The 244 carburetors are set up quit a bit differently from the 240's, 540's, 242's and 246's. Anyone familiar with the q-jet can make any of them work flawlessly for what you are doing. You'll love the q-jet once you get a good one, light years ahead of those POS gas guzzling Holley spread bore replacements. About the only good sound those make here, is when they "tink" off the dumpster outside the shop!.......Cliff

I would avoid the "NOS" carb as todays fuels will not react well with the carb... If you go with a rebuild from Ken it will have the updated and top of the line rebuild kit installed.... I have used many of Ken's carbs, Ken ROCKS! We just dyno tested a Q jet of his with 585 foot pounds of TQ.

Just got an email from Ken. Will be pulling the trigger on a performance built 244 from a 1968 350 that he currently has a core on. Thanks all for the help! I'll repost to let everyone know when I actually have her up and terrorizing Central Indiana!
