I started a quest to see if I can find the paperwork that may sometimes be located in the dash area of a GS, in my case a '71 GSX. I have the dash pad off, the gauge console loose, radio bezel out, glove box liner out, driver's kick panel off, A pillar molding trim off.

So far I don't see anything. I've read in other posts about the paperwork being rolled up like a cigar and stuffed in a recess on the driver's side of the dash. Can anyine be more decriptive about this exact location? (assumimng it's the same everytime) Other common dash areas to check?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Common areas to find a buildsheet:

    anywhere:gt:

    no really...

    Under the back seat

    BEHIND the back seat

On top of the gas tank

    In the door panel

These are some areas I've heard of. Where was your car made? Flint? That is ududally a clue as to where it might be.

I have found them in the door panel, and behind the back seat.

    Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply, Adam. Yes, my car was made in Flint. I know there isn't paperwork under/behind the backseat or over the gas tank as I've checked. That's what got me going on the dash business. I even peaked under the carpet in the driver's to see if anything was there. Nothing but nice solid floor pans.

I'll wait a while to see if anyone else has any replies then I'll start reassembly so I don't forget where all the screws go!

I found the build sheet for a 71 GS Stage 1 car in the dash just to the left of the vent on the drivers side of the dash. There is a small area there where it was rolled up and stuffed in there. You have to look close because mine had some type of black tape(resembled friction tape) on the edges that made it blend in with the dash. I know of several other cars that have had this sheet in them at the same location and they were all Flint built cars. BTW, the 71 Stage 1 I referred to was a Lime Mist car like your X.

Hope that helps and good luck.

    Thanks Larry.

Do you recall if you had to take the gauge cluster out to see this area?? I got it apart down to having the cluster loose, but not actually removing it.

    Ken,
If you are bringing your car to Ken's party we can look for the buildsheet then. That should make a big stir, with everyone there.

Ken, I found my"Broadcast Sheet" in the exact location described above. The Broadcast sheet is not the same as a build sheet. It's made of much thicker paper and has alot less info on it.It was kind of in the left upper cowl/ lower pillar area. It had the same blackish tape that really made it hard to see. I found it when I was taking the instrument cluster out, but can't remember if it had to be out to see it, sorry.
By the way, my car is a Flint car too...:TU:

We found one above the radio and also one rolled up as described above in the A pillar area. A Fisher Body sheet was under the carpet, next to the console.

Sounds like what I found tucked in the dash of the Riv.
Looked to me to be the build sheet from the Fisher body plant, with the paint, trim codes etc. It also had inspection notes written on it noting that the body was missing some window trim on the driver's side. :Dou:

    Hey Ken,

I know that you said you peaked under the carpet on the driver's side floorboard and noticed nothing but clean floors. When I found my sheet, it was underneath the driver's side footwell area, under the sound deadening material. Hard to get off and I had to be gentle (also that stuff stained the paper BAD) but I got it. Granted, my GS is a 69 and was built in Fremont, but I thought you might want to check this area as well. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the replies guys!

I may have missed it last night as everybody says it's hard to spot. I also didn't want to get as deep as pulling out the cluster, and perhaps you need that out to find it. I'm not sure how difficult that is, but I wanted to put it all back together last night, so didn't venture it.

Al, did your sheet provide enough documentation to establish your car as a GSX? I think for a '71 car I'd be looking for WA5 as a code??

Bealhm, I only peaked under the rug as I had the sill plate off to get out the kick panel. Sounds like I should probably pull the seats and console??

I put the car back together last night and will pursue this further, possibly at the Berwyn picnic, or sooner if I get the chance. How long do you think it will take for a group of Buick enthusiasts to strip the interior??? :Brow:

(And how long to put it back together?? :Dou: )

    Ken,

Yeah, you would need to get the d-side seat out of the way, but you could probably get away with leaving the console in. After you remove the sill plate and the seat & kick panel, you should just be able to roll the carpet back, or lift it up enough, (maybe use some sort of "prop-rod") to get underneath the carpet and pull up the sound deadener. Don't forget to ease the carpet up around the dimmer switch! Hopefully it will be there. Good luck!

    Ken,
The sheet in the dash is the "Body Shop Inspection" sheet. For a 70 car it will prove it is a GSX, for a 71 car you have a 75% chance I can prove it is a GSX.

For 70 cars the sheet found on top of the gas tank, and sometimes under the carpet would be the "Production Order Body Final." For 71-72 cars it would be either the "POBF" or the "Production Order Chassis Paint" sheets. Both of these sheets have different info then the sheet from the dash, but will prove a 70-72 car is a GSX.

There are also small sheets that are sometimes found under the front seat springs.

If you are interested I can bring examples of each type of "buildsheet" to the party.

I don't think it would take too long to take the interior out of your car. If there is a buildsheet anywhere in it we will find it. As far as putting it back together we can always trailer it back to your house. Just kidding.

Mine was rolled up and behind the driver's side kick panel. It had some black paint on it from when they sprayed the dash.

    Duane-

That ALL sounds great! (Well, except for the towing home part) :Dou:

I'd like your opinion on the car with or without paper, and am looking forward to you checking it out in a week and a half.

I can see it now, on hands and knees looking for screws in the grass so I can put it back together...

On a different topic, I understand you repop the heater control valve rubber insulator rings? Could you bring one with to the picnic? My valve crapped out this morning and I'm going to order one from Year One.

    Thanks!

    Ken,
I figured that last part would make you laugh. I will bring my 71 info so I can check it out.
No problem with the rubber insulator, I will bring one with me.

    Ken,

If I remember correctly, all I did was loosen the dash bezel containing the gauges so that I could pull it away from metal part of the dash. It helps if you release the speedometer cable from behind the dash. This can be done by pressing on the clip that holds the cable to the speedometer. It's kind of a one handed deal because it hard to reach up under the dash and get to the back of the speedometer. As Duane stated, the sheet I found was not the actual build sheet but a body beoadcast sheet. I have the one for my 70GSX which lists the options on the car and confirms that it is an X. My GSX was assembled on Aprils fools day 1970(4-1-70). Attached is a poor picture of the sheet. Sorry it's not clearer.

    Good luck on your search!
