Just priced out an underhood insulation kit from OPGI, about $45.00. Then priced out shipping, it was almost exactly the same as the insulation kit.

    This is just nuts!

When I was working I used to ship stuff via UPS or Fedex with the company code for half what they wanted when I shipped without the code. Somebody is making money here!

As my car is no show queen, I'm probably going to find something at the hardware store and make my own.

    Old guy rant over.

Commercial shippers get much better rates then we do. A few years back I bought a porch screen kit that when assembled made a nice 8' X 12' screened enclosure. After about six months a spot weld on a door hinge broke. I called the company that made the unit; they said ship the door back and they would fix it or replace it for free. The shipping company (UPS as I recall) wanted $53 to ship the door to the midwest from Massachusetts. When I bought the whole porch enclosure the shipping was about $30. I found a locak welder who fixed the broken weld for about $15.

I see a lot of that on eBay, sellers make their money on overcharging for shipping

    Hi,

I was looking at evilbay last night, and 1 seller had nice items but shipping was 121 bucks on everything

For the insulation you might want to see if they do any local car show/swap meets near you and arrange pickup there, unless it's a need now thing

    Regards,

As a Individual who ships quite a bit of stuff , I find that if its something I have listed on E-Bay I have to inflate the shipping cost because E-bay takes a cut out of the shipping charge along with a cut of the actual item . Its the only way to break even .

I've cut way back on Evilbay purchases. Between the inflated shipping and now sales tax you an easily add %20-30% over the item cost. Amazon Prime, free shipping, and if you have their credit card 5% back.

Found the insulation at Collectors Auto Supply, In. for $56.84, SHIPPED!
    No sales tax either.
No bad reviews I could find.
Even if it's the wrong color or not absolutely correct, it's got to be better than the rags I now have.

I used to buy a lot of stuff off ebay and have them ship it to switzerland. Always with USPS and prices were ok.
But since about 2 years everyone uses this global shipping crap by evilbay and shipping is just out of this world...

I try to find parts in forums and have nice people ship it to me

2 things drive shipping prices, size and weight. A large light item costs more then a small heavy item.

I have almost a complete under hood insulation kit. 4 pieces. It's new. I'll send it to you for the price of the ride.

When I had to ship my Gear Vendors for service, I got some shipping quotes for 40 lbs, NY to California. It was 100.00+ without insurance.. Mike at GV sent me a UPS label and I slapped it on the box and dropped it off at a UPS store. Cost me 35.00 each way.:)

So far IMHO for shipping MANY things I use USPS. Had to ship something to Germany. Went to the locals, UPS, UPS store, Fed-EX, DHL, etc. five in all. For a 3oz. package shipping ranged from a high of #180.00 plus down to $130.00. Went to the Post Office & put the part in a padded envelope that cost $1.19 plus the cost of shipping the part came out to less than $20.00.
As far as I'm concerned the Small, Medium & Large Flat Rate boxes are the DEAL OF THE CENTURY. AND, the next best is the boxes are FREE. Can't beat that. Their saying goes "if it fits, it ships" up to 150lbs. I do a lot of the 808 2.5 turns lock-lock P/S boxes for the big GM cars. they weigh approx. 30+ pds. I line the box with old paneling, sides, top & bottom because the box alone is not strong enough. Then wrap it up in the strong packing tape with the fabric strands. The Large Flat Rate box is just big enough & it's $20.00 with priority shipping. Will get from Conn. to Ca. in 2-4 days. If I put it in one of my boxes & ship for priority would be over a $100.00.
So far, knock on wood, I haven't had any problems with lost or missing shipments. Comes with tracking & $50.00 insurance.

Unfortunately shipping is expensive. The prices are only going up . I would agree though $45 is high for that item. But depends on the box and possibly the packing material and the shipping service.

Shipping + box+ packing material + paying labor to someone to actually pack it. If it's a business they sure won't be doing it for free.

But If you never ship anything and are only on the receiving end you will never know the actual cost.

I ship items all of the time and have for about 15 years.....stuff that use to cost $11 now costs $100 to ship.

The flat rate box is the best bet if the item fits unless it's super light then First Class mail is the winner..

Luckily I find boxes in body shop dumpsters so I don't have to buy them. Packing material is expensive.....check out the price on a roll of bubble wrap. Packing peanuts are about $4-$5 a bag. Even take a look at the price of boxes or bubble envelopes. Nothing is cheap.

Between ebay and PayPal you lose about 14% on the total sale including shipping. They win !!

    Ask me how I know....

I hate the styrofoam peanuts. I buy model T parts from an outfit in Massachusetts; they pack everything in mushed-up newspaper. It works just as well as bubblewrap or styrofoam peanuts, and is a lot more eco-friendly.

Shipping is bad enough but now companies are raising prices on all kinds of stuff claiming Chinese tariffs are the cause. A garage door I got a couple years ago for $675 installed is $1050 now...they say it's due to the steel tariffs.....
