    High School = Very Bad

To be brutally honest I hated high school. I went out for Football my freshman year, played 2 games and broke my arm. I went out for Basketball played 2 games and broke my arm again. Never went out for sports after that. My high school was very small 200 people inlcuding 7th and 8th grade (class of 41 people). I did not fit in with any of them. Sports was a very big thing. Not being in sports I was continually harrased by kids in my school, kids from a neighboring schools, teachers, and adminstration. Particpated in drama my freshman year and ended up giving it up when I got a job. I did not study in school and got Bs for the most part because I really did not care or want to be there.

Had a girlfriend for a couple years but the relationship was very rocky at best. She was not good looking or popular and ended up dating a guy that continually threatened me because he wanted to date her.

Work at a Grocery store for 3 years to pay for a 1970 Buick GS Stage-1 I bought when I was 17 (my first car). I ended up getting T-boned in it 6 months after I bought it (Did get it fixed).

Had a tough time with my parents. As with most teenagers, my parents just did not understand what I was going through and I did not really want to talk to them about it.

Did not party, drink or do any other drugs. Mostly kept to myself, my car and my work. I did love music and cars but did not seem to be able to connect with other people about it.

Did not go out and raise hell, just wasn't something I wanted to do.

I only had a couple friends in high school. I don't really know or care where most of the people I went to school with are today.

It was a very unpleasent time in my life both from outside sources and how I saw things back then. I am glad to be beyond it all.

High School? Hated it...bored bored bored, couldn't stand the snobs on the student council, or the stuckup cheerleaders, or the stupid jocks (head choaches som was quarterback, go figure, and the biggest moron alcoholic ever). And since West Texas was and is FOOTBAWL country, that didn't leave much for me and my buddies to do but drink heavily, drive dirt roads way too fast, listen to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and The Who at speaker-distorting volume levels.

My buddy had a really neat '70 Mustang, had a 250 straight-six with a cam and a manual tranny. I had a '68 Skylark Custom w/ 350 2-bbl, 2-speed automatic (super-turbine 300??) duals w/ shorty glasspacks. The Mustang was really quick off the line up to about 40mph, but the Skylark would walk away from it after that. But then, the Mustang got about 24mpg. My senior year, I drove Dad's "old" Ranchero, a '62. I thought I was being punished by the gods at the time, but now I'd love to have that old Ranchero.

I'd say we were the underachievers. We hung out with the Freaks, I guess as in long-haired-freaky-people. Yup, lots of beer, smokable beer (is THAT what it's called?)and mayhem in the a.m. We all read quite a bit, everything from Anarchist Cookbook to Science Fiction.

We lived out in the country, and built a huge collection of life-threatening devices, like the "Swing of Death", the "Stone(d) Boat", and the -well, I'd better not go there... just imagine 4 guys with a large scrap pile, a welder, a junker '62 Falcon 4-door, about 20 pounds of black powder, some detonation cord, a dirt road, a herd of goats, and the Principal's car...that was 22 years ago, but I'm still not admitting anything!

I NEVER got in any trouble at school (got caught, that is) until I went on a UIL Chior trip 2 weeks before graduation. The head football coach (the one with the alky son) found some liquor on the bus, decided it was mine and that I was lying about it (I wasn't lying - that wasn't my vodka. My JACK DANIELS was better hidden.) and so the principal drove down to Austin and hauled me and my buddy back home at 3am. Next day the principal tells me and my Dad that I'm expelled, I won't get to walk across the stage, and if I come on campus, they'll call the police! But he does let slip that if Dad'll pay a $200 cash-only "fine", I won't be expelled, etc. Dad and I looked at each other, got up and left. I ended up going to work full time at my part-time job, and made quite a bit of money. Never did "walk the stage", but I could still care less, it was 2 weeks less I had to spend at that place.

Oh, well, I survived in spite of my best efforts...

EDIT - I almost forgot - I got drug to my 10th reunion (12 years ago), and found out that out of a class of 108, 10 were in state or federal prison, 7 of those on death row! And they kicked ME out!!!

I was definitely known as a "motorhead" in my class of '71. I had a gold/ parchment interior '66 GS that I put a '67 400 drivetrain in it in '70. The only faster car was a modified '69 Stg. 1 4 spd. car that a fellow classmate had, which I ended up buying in '76 after he crashed it. Also, dated my wife in my senior year, and still married to her! (We still have a '70 GS conv't we bought in '72) High School was a good time. Dennis

Clique.......that would imply I had friends...................a couple. I wasn't into Buicks until after college. In highschool I hung out with all of the musicians. I remember when Nirvana changed everything for us. No longer had to put up with the long-haired hair band crap. It starting to be cool to play punk. I didn't get into the punk scene really hard until college, but I could tell that the big change for me was starting at the end of my senior year. I was happy to get out of HS...........because college meaned 100% musical freedom away from all of the BS in HS.

I never considered the small group I hung out with a click I guess. Just friends that seemed to always be together. If I "had" to name a click, I would say we were "jocks with atitude". Offensive MVP for football, All league basketball team member, went to state in golf and track. BUT I never really hung out with any of the other "jocks" in my school. In fact I never really liked any of them that much, and to be honest I don't think I could sit here and tell you where a single one of them are today. Which is bad cause I only had like 15 guys in my graduating class, lmao. I had a BB Mopar then and alot of friends that were older, into cars, or from other towns. Fights ? YUP.....way to much. No time for women then cause they didn't like my friends. Which was ok with me. If I needed one, put on the letter jacket and one could be found, lol(hs girls are soooo preoccupied with who they are seen with). Waited about 3 months after graduating and enlisted in the Navy for 8 years. Had a blast, went around the world, pitched softball and played basketball for the ships teams(that gets you outa some work). Even played some type of semi-pro football for awhile in S.D. returning punts and kicks, till I got SMOKED one game. LIGHTS OUT !!!! Enough of that crap, I was done with sports. I still golf some, and bowling fills the winter months. For me I hated everything there was about school. Couldnt wait to get out, am glad I'm out now, and have NO desire to go back. Our 10 year reunion was in 95'. I helped some of the girls in the class set everything up and left the night before to go to Denver to buy a V8 Vega. Spent the weekend in Denver and didn't have to see anyone from ten years before.............Wonder what I can buy for my 20 year ????????????????

I'll think of something I have a feeling.

    later..........................

    Joe Kelsch Eat Mo' Rats

I liberated myself from High School in 1991. Thank God I made it out. I wasn't in a clique. I hung out with everyone. One day I'd eat lunch with the jocks (because swimming was considered a sport) and with the super brainy geeks the next. The brainy geeks were into cars, so it was easy to talk with them. I think two of them were in metal shop. I never hung around the burnouts cause they smoked up too much or the loners cause they liked being alone (duh!). I was in the stage crew for a few weeks (they got to watch TV during study hall).

I was also a Boy Scout during High School. We were the athletic troop. Wherever we camped we played tackle football and God forbid another troop challenged us. We kicked everyone's a$$ literally. We were very physical. I managed to get up to Life before my troop folded cause there weren't enough kids. We had an oportunity to go to the troop down the road but they were too preppy. They only played non-physical games during meetings, so no one would get hurt. I thought that was what being a kid was all about...comparing scars. They actually required you to wear a uniform, also. At my troop you bought it once and only wore it during Eagle Scout ceremonies.

Is the next thread going to be about college??? I got some stories to tell!!!

Greg Schmelzer What are you looking at?!

    Brains and geeks

Welp, I guess you could say i hung out with the brains and geeks, and I guess you could say I was one too. Took all the honors classes. Got through 2 years of calculus before I got out, physics, chemistry. And not using a bit of it!! But I did have a 3.92 GPA. Not even in the top 10.:Do No: Should have gone to college but decided to join the AF instead.

Looking to go back to school this spring and finish my Industrial Engineering degree. Maybe make some more money and finally get that ever elusive Buick.

    Class of '87

Just as I started my sophomore year we moved from my hometown (total population 464) to Bismarck and a sophomore class of 469. Best thing to ever happen to me. I didn't fit in "back home". Not being a jock, and not a drinker, I was of no use in my class.

Here I hooked up with a clique best described as motorheads. We were a total mix of everybody - jocks, loads, goaties, geeks. We even skipped the rivalries of the four local high-schools & had friends from all of them (shop classes were shared at the local vo-tech center). We grew to be a pretty large group - 30-40 hanging out together on Main at night. Some of the best times of my life. I'm still in touch with a lot of them and a few are still close friends.

We had to be an oddball looking bunch - everything from "fresh from the rodeo" to "Hell's Angels" to a guy who usually wore a white cardigan over a white turtleneck with white Docker cutoffs and white slip-ons.....

Had some decent machines tho - mostly Olds & Mopar cars & Ford & Chevy trucks. I was the only Buick guy and I'm one of the few who still has his car.

Things haven't changed, I'm still the same person I've ALWAYS been (and always WILL be).:Do No: I never "existed" in High School, meaning that I "knew" everyone, but No One "knew" me (by MY choice).

I guess you could consider me a "loner", but I'm actually an "observer"! I like to study how people interact with each other, to see how "honest", and "sincere" people are!:Smarty:
I probably should've taken some kind of Psychology classes, to become a Psychologist, or something, but I don't think that I need to PAY all the extra money (to a College, for them to give me a piece of PAPER, to show that I know what I'm talking about!). I have a pretty good "judgement" about people's personalities, and who I choose to trust or not!:Smarty:

I graduated from High School, only to prove that I COULD! Otherwise, it was a waste of time, to me, anyway (I was READING NEWSPAPERS, at an "adult" level, when I was only 3!:Smarty: ). College is not only a waste of TIME, but also MONEY (especially when you have to pay for it, without help!) I have disproved that "theory" (you have to go to College to be successful) to be wrong, and I continue to discourage people from going to College to "become" successful!
HARD WORK is what makes you "successful". The KNOWLEDGE is what you get from the EXPERIENCE of what you do! (I should write a book! ) Oddly enough, I UNteach what people learned (or DIDN'T learn) in school, and teach them the RIGHT way to make the most money, for what they LIKE to do!

TO THIS DAY, I can "Recognize" people that I went to High School with, even if they were in a DIFFERENT class year, by NAME: (Just For Example) "Hi, You're (Missy Johnson). We were in the same Class in High School".
(Missy's) response would be: "Oh, yeah, I knew you looked familiar. Do you remember so-and-so, from Computer Class?" She would never even bother to ask MY name. She didn't know me then, so she doesn't need to know me, NOW, either!:Smarty:

The way that I "observe" ALL people is that no matter how "smart/dumb/rich/poor/attractive/unattractive/WHATEVER", EVERYONE is "average" at a different level!:Smarty: I get along with (most) everyone, for that reason: we ALL have "SOMETHING" in common!:Do No:

I was never with "one" (clique, as you say). I had many different friends, from the "Upper" class, like, Chess Club, Economics, Spanish, and Science Classes, as well as the "partyers" who were also members of my Garage Bands!:bglasses:

I learned about "Musclecars", on my own, AFTER I graduated High School! I only WISH I would've known (about 4 years) SOONER!:ball: I WOULD'VE had a (#s matching, original) GSX, THEN, and I would STILL have it NOW!:Smarty:

Funny enough, as I said, "Things don't change". Even HERE, with this Buick Group, I feel that I "know" MANY of you guys, but many of you DON'T "know" ME! I feel that I have "friends" here, that I'VE called and SPOKEN with (on the phone), or that I'VE gone to visit (or you've come to visit MY home).:TU::bglasses:

If we HAVEN'T "SPOKEN", then you probably really DON'T "know" me! What's difficult with "message boards", is that it is SO "easy" to misunderstand what a person MEANS, because you can't TYPE "EMOTION" to make a POINT! Sometimes, even if I feel that I have information to HELP someone else, I WON'T "POST" it, because of the way that it may be MISINTERPRETED! That's what I DO enjoy about this board, though: I can MEET other people with "similar" interests (Buicks, MAINLY, only to find out that we also like similar: Music, Hobbies (golf, model cars, hunting, movies, sports, WHATEVER)!:bglasses:

Although, we don't always agree on some things, we are all entitled to our opinions (and more importantly, we can forgive each other if we can work it out, for the most part), and I am glad to consider you my friends, and to be a part of this "clique".:TU:

    Now, you "know" me.:TU::grin:

    Scott,
I really relate to what you said. I was the same way. Most of the people I went to high school with were the same ones I had known all my life. I didn't really "hang" with one specific group. Knew about everyone in all the classes 3 years before and after me. Don't know if they really knew me or didn't really care. Was a gear head most of my years although I did do well in school and went onto to study Mechanical Engineering in college. Was friends with jocks, burnouts, freaks, geeks, you name it. Although I must admit, in recent years I have run into people I recognized from school whom I figured didn't really even know I existed in school, and they have remembered me by name. Surprising at least to me. THose that do remember me and knew me well still call for advice on cars and life in general. I feel the same about these boards and the internet in general. You "meet" people on here that you say to yourself. " Wow! I probably could be good friends with him". From what I have seen of your posts I think you are probably one of those. That is why I am looking forward to meeting so many of you if you come to Quaker this August.

You are exactly right, Steve!:TU::grin: I think I have a pretty good "judgement of character" to know who I could trust as a friend. Even as I replied to one of your posts a while back, I thought the same of you.:TU::bglasses: I am also looking forward to putting "faces" with "(user)names"!:TU:

About the only thing that really disappoints me with this Buick club, is the DISTANCE BETWEEN all of us!:ball:

Seems impersonal on the board. Like to look a person in the eye when I talk to them. The board is great as an introduction, but the distance is a bummer. Like to be with my friends.
