hi guys/girls I am new to the group,,mostly because I may have a very unusual 72 buick GS stage 2,,I think,,I got the car from the state of Washington,,mostly done,,need some work,,it came with the org air cleaner (worn stage 2 sticker) and a stage 1 engne built to stage 2 specs,,tis a "U" code vin,,itwent from flint to slessors motors in Newmarkt Canada. Canada like he US did not keep records then. I'm am trying to get info from the dealer now, it has moved and I don't know if the owner is still around. But anyway this is the "Sticker" on the rad cover,,the cover is chromed and so are the hood springs,,that's the only difference I see on the car compared to all other GS's I've looked at,,no re chromed.. has any one seen these stckers,,I was old they sent them with the stage 2 cars,,my goal is to track down any paperwork and the org owner, dealer, and maybe,,just maybe the org engine,, any info would help thanks Butch

Welcome to the v8 board. Nice ride!

There were no factory assembled Stage 2 motors delivered to any dealerships. Stage 2 parts were over the counter parts only - purchased from dealers.

Post a few close-up shots of you engine bay.

Your car should have a 12 bolt rear and a Canadian import sticker in the door jamb if original.

If the emblems below GS on your fenders read "Stage 2", they are aftermarket emblems someone has added to the vehicle.

Canadian law requires that records be kept for all cars built or sold new in Canada. If this car was sold new in Canada, you can get the information from GM of Canada's Vintage Vehicles Services department and it will list the options and engine:

the engine in my car now is a 72 stage 1 - 40 over,,built to stage 2 specs. The heads are beefed up stage 1's. the air cleaner came with the car when the former owner bought it,along with the fan cover and rad.cover,,most have some kind of sticker on them,,smog stuff I believe,,this car has the sticker I posted,,I was told that the S. 2 parts came with a sticker that the dealer put on or it just came with that chome rad. cover. I have the build sheet and it states the car went to Canada,,Newmarket,Ontario (Slessor motors Ltd.) Invoice # 4F-309502 F= Canada(export),,thank for the info on vingage car inports, Going there now. I hope they will be able to help. I will let you guys know what i find out :)

P.S.,,My motor is a stage 1,,looking for the org. stage 2 motor or who ever ordered the car and or the stage 2 parts,,when it came to the U.S. it was motorless I believe. the buildsheet,, sticker and the air cleaner are the only clues I have to go on that it was at one time a stage 2 car. I think the site about canadas vintage cars will help me,at least I hope,,that motor may be sitting in someones garage somewhere in Canada who knows,,thats what I'm looking to find out

yes I know,,it has a 12 bolt/373/,I know you can buy emblems,,but the sticker came with over the counter stage 2 parts,,at one time the car had a stage 2 package put on the org. "U" code car that went to Canada,,weather it was done at Slessor Motors Ld. or another dealership is what I'm trying to find out. I haven't looked at the door yet But the build sheet said where the car went,,lets put it this way-- if I were the first owner and wanted a stage 2 car and I live in Canada. I would have went to Slessors motors (that was a buick dealer) and ordered a U code 455/A-9 high performance engine,,,B-3&7 4 speed with consolette,,,F-9/wide oval lettered tires,,,G-4/positive traction differential,,,U-7-tack and gauges,,,V-4 chrome wheels,,Vin.#4G37U-2H-13758 (My Vin) and then tell slessors I would like to have the stage 2 PARTS too,, so slessors orders the car and the parts,,the car comes in, Slessors's install the stage 2 parts and puts the sticker on the rad. cover and the air cleaner,,,OK the org owner has a buick stage 2 GS,,then later he desides to get rid of the car BUT changes the stage 2 motor and puts it in the barn,,, THATS what I'm Trying to find out,,did you look at the sticker,,,stage 2 cam,,560 FPT,,420 H.P. That is the sticker that came with he stage 2 parts I understand what your saying,,you can buy all the emblems But you cant buy that sticker unless you buy the stage 2 parts,,I cant explain it any better and NO you would not get a stage 1 car and gut it to put stage 2 in it,,unless you already had one

The biggest part of the Stage2 package would be the heads. Stage 2 heads have a better exhaust port, and COMPLETELY different bolt pattern for the headers (Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers). The other parts of the Stage 2 package was the Stage2 cam, 11:1 pistons, the Edelbrock B4B intake manifold, and a Holley 850 DP carburetor. Buick only cast 75-100 sets of cast iron Stage2 heads. Today, TA Performance makes the Stage2 heads in aluminum. Have a look at the exhaust side of the head. http://www.taperformance.com/prodimages/large/TA_STAGE_2SE-A.jpg

I have never seen a sticker like that. I don't know what kind of documentation you would get with the Stage2 package. You may in fact have some Stage2 parts, but apparently not the heads or headers? What intake, and carburetor are on the car now?

Years ago , and I do mean YEARS AGO mid to late 1980's there was a guy advertised in Hemmings that he had a Stage 2 engine for sale. Funny thing is he was in Cherry Grove Pa. That is in the Allegheny National Forest which isn't that far from you. Probably doesn't mean that much unless your car was already in Pa at the time.

Unless you melted down the stage one heads, poured the molten metal into a stage 2 mold and recast it as a stage 2, turning your stage 1 heads into stage 2 heads did not happen.

Easy there Jim, he probably means stage 2 spec short block, ie cam, intake etc. I know you are dying to blow him out of the water on this, but is it any way to treat a new guy with an unusual car? FWIW, it seems like he knows what he is talking about.

I had a 70 stage one with a 71 stage 1 service replacement block, factory stage 2 pistons but stage 1 heads. The engine still exists in a GSX but now with stage 2 iron heads added. So, I am not suggesting this change could not have occurred post delivery.

Does anyone else remember seeing this sort of foil sticker before? I do, but it was a LONG time ago and I don't remember where. I don't recall the details, but I think it was a dealer thing rather than just something a shop would slap on. At the upper left were crossed flags.

really,,what part of my post that most of you aren't getting,,,its about the stickers I posted,,it is on my car,,,It came with the stage 2 parts that were installed in my car at some point,(most likely in Canada),,that motor is no longer in my car...... MY Engine now Is a 72 stage 1 that is built to stage 2 spects,,11/1 ross alu. pistons,,cam, bored to 465,,it does not have stage 2 heads,,,I WANTED to show you the sticker Because I was told that was the sticker THAT came with the stage 2 parts THAT are on the org. ENGINE that I'm looking for,,,the only proof I have that it WAS a stage 2 car is that stickerpp and the org. air cleaner,,,YES I know you can buy the S. 2 emblens,,the owner before me said when got the car the air cleaner and rad. cover (With The Stage 2 Sticker On It) came with the car,,He and I believe that at one time it had a stage 2 package on the ORG. Engine,,thats why I'm trying to track the car owners, any Paper Work and IF I get real LUCKY the ORG MOTOR,,,NOW i'm going to the vintage import car of Canada website to look for info,,thank you,,he understood what I was doing,,Everyone Trys to say its not what I think it was,,,prove me wrong,,give me proof that the sticker is not the one that came with the stage 2 parts,,show me the one that did,,thats all i'm looking for!!! weather I'm right or wrong I WANT PROOF,,,not just someone telling me what he thinks,,SHOW me what you know,,,GARY PAINE is who I need to talk to,,cant find a connection to him,,he was in charge of STAGE 2 PARTS from what I have been told,,I hope everyone reads this carefully,,i'm not melting down heads,,although if I could I would I hope this explains what i'm doing and and if anyone has a pic of the paperwork on a stage 2 or the sticker that a sent with the S. 2 parts, please show it to everyone,,I know that they only sent 73 parts packages out,,and have seen that 12 DID COME from the factory and I can back that up from a web site and there WERE 3 stage 3 test engines built,,2 were blown and 1 still alive,,I've been researching the stage 2's for 3 years now,,I know my car could have been one at one time,,if I can find the org motor it will be one again,,,,,,,,LOOK at the sticker,,Tell me what you know,,not what you "think" Ive already heard "its fake",,not real,,you can buy them,, prove it to me,,and remember its the sticker I posted not the Stage 2 emblens

Here is what I know from being an owner of more than one stage 1 and more than one GSX car. Production GSx cars never had emblems on their fenders that read GS or stage 1 or stage 2. The factory may have produced a stage 2 decal but there is no factory part number or reference to a stage 2 emblem from the factory as far as I know. This means someone added these emblems to your car or added the red GSX paint job or both. The factory GSX decals are missing from the quarter panel and the rear spoiler. The sticker you posted appears to read "465" CID or am I misreading it? If I am correctly reading it, then I would say it is aftermarket. These known facts initially cast a cloud over the legitimacy of the car. But the proof of how it was equipped as delivered from the factory can be best determined from the factory paperwork which is available. Let us know how the paperwork reads. We are interested.

Jim, I don't think he said there were stage 2 emblems on the car, only an air cleaner decal and the funky rad cover sticker.

Steve -Look at the picture of the car. It has either a stage 1 or stage 2 emblem on the fender. I cannot tell because of the size. I just covered both contingencies. Neither is correct for a GSx.

My suspicion is that the sticker in question was created by an aftermarket engine builder. Kenne-Bell should be considered. Asking Motorman on the Board may yield the correct answer to this. Ken Betts may know since he worked there back then.

Somewhere in the last 10 years another one of these same stickers was posted. It could have been by a prior owner of the same car. Currently I cannot locate that thread.
