Hey guys lemme 'pologize in advance, I haven't been on this board in some time and now when I am, I'm asking a question about computers that's prolly been asked a whole bunch. But I'm still gonna ask it  ..
I finally got cable modem and it worked alright for the first few minutes and is still working the problem is my computer.
I defrag it, delete history, cookies, update windows. ( i have a hp laptop with xp about 2001 model if im right) i downloaded pop up blocker, have a firewall, and antivirus. I don't have hardly any memory used but i think i have lots of spyware and whatnot.
my ? is ... should i break down and buy an antivirus etc.. instead of downloading them for free online? cuz they don't have junk yards for "used" antivirus protection do they?:Brow:
think i may have a trojan virus and the pop up blocker doesn't work but i can't seem to get anything right. i even did the desktop recovery thing... any one have any ideas?
    thanks

Spend the money and buy Norton Systemworks 2004!:beer

It fixed a load of problems on my computer and caught a bunch of spyware crap. Catches viruses like crazy!

It is also copy-proof. So if you plan on buying it and burning a copy for your friend, fuggetaboutit.

    So how's that Lark doin?

You can go to a website called www.downloads.com and download a program called "spybot". It will clean your computer of "spyware" and "Ncase" and any other pop up generator. Works like a charm!

    Adaware:
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

when used in conjunction with spybot you can get rid of nearly every spyware app on your computer

    next up... http://housecall.antivirus.com

free virus scanner it will clean and remove virii for ya :)

next up, to get rid of spyware for good.. www.mozilla.org and download FireFox ... it has a built in popup blocker, it has tabbed browsing, you can turn of certain javascript events from occuring (like the status bar scrolling) and you can do all kinds of fun stuff.. also, if you use outlook, SERIOUSLY you need to consider a new email client... my reasoning is below...

microsoft's products are so integrated into windows that it's more of a danger than anything else. outlook is the core of all evil if you ask me. code can be executed without your knowledge or your interaction, this is the leading cause of virus's infecting your computer... IE is the same way, there are so many bugs that are found so often that you can get infected very easily just by using IE ...

the solution is of course run Windows Update all the time, make sure its set to check for updates and automatically download them then prompt you to install.. this will solve a lot of problems.. next is to just not use Internet Explorer (IE) and Outlook. they're bug ridden messes of code that will do nothing but cause you headaches...

Most things you download and install these days have spyware in them. If you installed Kazaa for example, it put about 139 pieces of spyware on your system (I'm not kidding).

There is also a program called Ad-Aware that you can use to see if spyware is the problem. I prefer it to SpyBot, but that is just an opinion. It is pretty good about finding most everything, and it updates itself over the web very easily.

Speaking of updating things over the web, when was the last time you updated your virus definitions? If they are more than 2-3 weeks old, they probably aren't catching the latest, nastiest bugs.

If you are using a personal firewall software package, then ditto for your firewall as far as updates are concerned. Those don't work all that well in the first place, and they tend to become dated over time and less effective as new hacks become available. I'd see if there are any patches for your firewall software out there, and I would do so every month.

A little more advice -- unplug everything when you aren't online. If your machine and/or broadband connection are not turned on and plugged into the internet, they can't get hacked.

Let me know if I can be of any specific assistance with your problems.

  10. look for a prog callled adaware its a trojan finder prog n deletes em when theyre found...also rids yer 'puter of teknum n mole files...its freeware... and try n track down a prog called enditall... its a freeware thing again, that terminates all tsr memmory resident progs, makes machine run upto 35% faster..
norton is fine, buy it its worth the money, but doesnt always deal with miner and trojan stuff, adaware is the best thing for that..
i have copies of both an will email them to you if you need them.. jus email me evil666greaser@aol.com and i'll send em on as soon as i can.
think the site www.pcworld.com has both progs ready to download.. hope thats a help.. :)

I asked evil666greaser this already but fig I could stick it up here as well. When I go to search for something like the word Skylark and then after I search for the word Skylark (online) I'll search for the word Shenendoah (hypothetical) when I search for something that starts with the same letter a whole dang list comes up under where I'm typing and it is quite annoying. It just started doing this and I deleted my internet history and cookies. When I went to delete the files it said it wasn't responding and asked if I wanted to send an error report. None of the deleting prevented anything from coming up under the same first letter. Did I miss something?
    Thanks again....

    Download CWShredder and Hijack This.

But you need to have supervision when using them.

I always use Adaware and spybot together. Seems one catches what the other misses.

And Norton Systemworks 2004, while stellar, is expensive. 2003 is very similar and can be had for $15 online in some cases. In case you are cash-strapped.

Spybot is good stuff just like all the other guys said before...one suggestion though, if you have an aftermarket firewall installed you may have some programs with blocked access. Maybe explain why you cant download certain programs? Hard to tell without lookin at the 'puter.
