Hey guys, before I just start tearing into my dash I'm looking for any tips that will help me get at that cable. It's not broken but it's making a little noise and the needle wobbles. I'm hoping to just grease it and reinstall it.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Remove dash pad then the screws along the top of the cluster. Should be able to pull it out enough to reach in there

Thanks, and the dash pad just has some screws on the right side and it snaps in on the left?

If the car has cruise control: disconnect the cable at the transducer and lubricate it from that end.

    From the 1968 BCSM:

No cruise, sure wish I could pull the cable out the bottom of the housing at the trans but no such luck.

What holds the bottom of the instrument panel? Below the headlight switch and HVAC controls?

4 screws going into the dash pad from the cluster. 4 speed nuts along the bottom holding it to the metal dash. More scres under the cover holding the top of the cover. 1 or 2 speed nuts under the R side holding the pad to the metal. Remove glove box liner to get to them. If you plan on completely removing the cluster you must remove the 2 nuts holding the climate control to the cluster. Its fragile so be very careful. Once all the screws to the pad are removed there are 3 spring clips one in the middle and one on each end. Pull hard!

Thanks! I did have the dash pad off. Trouble is the cluster won't move near enough to get behind it. At this point I think I'll just drive it until the cable breaks and then use my cell phone for a speedo. I just don't want to break a bunch of stuff to fix something else.

I suppose if I really wanted to I might be able to use a metal nibbler to cut an access hole in the dash to get to the cable, probably won't do that though.

From what I remember when I owned a '68 Riviera, you have to remove the light switch from the instrument panel.
There is a little knob on the shaft that you need to press in to remove the shaft from the switch.
Remove the big plastic chrome ring/nut, after that you can slide the light switch out from the rear and pull out the panel.

There are vacuum lines attached to the switch.

May be able to get in there by removing the center vent and maybe the clock.

I had the center vent duct out, no clear way to reach back there. I swear they built the whole car around the speedo cable. ;)

I replaced my clock through there so was thinking if it was out of the way....

I'll be digging into it again soon. Driving season is coming to a close up here so I can leave the car in a disassembled state for a while as I figure it out. I will be looking at your mention of the clock again.
