Hi , I need some help , advice or tricks to took my console out of the car .

All the bolts are out , even the small clip that hold the harness to the clip from the inside , the console move freely but the handle is bigger than the opening and I don't want to break anything ....

Will I have to took off the handle ?? I prefer not if there is some mecanical adjustement after . What to do ???

FYI the car is a 68 Skylark with the long console (2 speed auto on the floor)

    Thank you

Finally got it ! I unbolt (2 bolts on the top) the shifter handle slowly as I watch carefully and nothing move .

But I discovered that the handle is cracked on one side :Dou: Hope this can be easy to fix ... going to a welding shop next monday .

Anyone know what kind of metal the handle is made of ?

The handle is pot metal with chrome, and probably very difficult to weld. Common problem on 68-9 shifters.I repaired mine with a piece of brass strip from a hobby shop, drilled and small screws and nuts. Had to do a lot of test fitting and additional grinding with the Dremel tool to get it to function, but it was fine when done. Removing/reinstalling it shouldn't have any impact on the adjustment, but if it does, it is an easy fix to loosen the bolt in the trunion where the cable attaches to the transmission shift lever under the car and re-adjust.

Does anyone had his handle fix (weld) ? What kind of material they (or you) use ?

    Thank you

    Hi Donald,
I had a few pot metal parts welded at a local welding shop and the result was good (I mean solid!). I even had pot metal gears for my 65's power vent windows repaired for cheap and now they work like new ones.

If the part that needs to be welded is chrome-plated and visible, be aware that it won't look good unless you have it rechromed...

Too bad I didn't remove that console from the 69 Skylark Custom that was in a local junkyard 13 years ago... It was still in the car when it went to the crusher.
