I am needing some help on the offset and size on a rear weld wheel on a stock 71 8.5 10 bolt rear in a 71 GS and how wide of wheel can I go with? 15x8? 15x9? 15x10? Also what is the largest or shall I say most practicle drag radial? 275/15? 295/15?

Also how about from wheels and tires? What size do you recommend? Thanks

If you do as each on here for "15x10" you will find that many of us have 15x10 rear wheels with 5.5 inch backspace. I use the summt brand wheels. 295/55r 15 fit really well. Some people have squeezed in 325/50r15 but it takes some mods to the fenders and a 5 and 5/8" backspace makes a bit more room but requires a custom rim to be made.

How tall are the 295/55 and the 325/50? I have 275/60's on the rear of the Riv now but would like a shorter tire but the same tread with.

Go with a 295/50R15 they are about 26.6" tall

The 295/55R15 is still a 28" tall tire the same as your 275/60R15

The 325/50R15 is 27.8" tall as well

    Here is a calculator:

Here is a pic of the 295/55R15 on the summit 15x10:

The above combo is what I am using for drag racing and the below wheels are for street driving:

And here are the street wheels which are 15x10 summit wheels with 285/70R15 that are 30.5" tall:

15x10 weld draglite with 5.5bs with 325/50/15 is what I ran this past year had to pump up maintain 10lbs of air in each bag and trim 1/4in off wheel well trim/1/4 panel, big bump or weird angle would barely scrub sidewall ,, 275/60 on a 10in wheel looks good and clears every thing, as far as wheels go im a big Centerline fan Weld lugnuts are a pain ive had more sets than I can count Centerline will still build the old "prostock" wheels for not much more than a stocked wheel, Prostocks are a damn good lookin wheel on a GS and better yet you dont see them on every hot rod at the track, Weld RTS line is awesome but pricey

I managed to get 15x10 (5 inch BS) steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps with 295/50/15 BFG tires comfortably under my 70 Skylark that has a 71 8.5 rear end in it. No trimming or hitting and never heard a rub or seen results from rubbing. I live in rural Amish country with alot of hills, potholes and such too...

That is exactly what Im looking for. I've got 245/60/15 on the fronts now and the 275's on the back. Been wanting to level it out and drop the car a few inches. Now... Do I buy 4 new in the MT or Hancook brand. or just the 2 BFG's for the back? :Do No:

The mt drag radials are hard to beat just buy the rears if the fronts are in good shape. 295/50r15 would get your rear sitting lower

For the 70-72 skylarks the 15x10 with 5.5 backspace and 295/55r15 is the largest tire that fits without any trimming or rubbing issues. Sure if a person wants to push the limits larger tires can fit but be prepared for rubbing and or cutting to make room. The 28x12.5-15 are the same size as the 295/55r15.

Another option for people looking for a taller tire the 30x10.5-15 fits well too but the 30x12.5-15 is really tight.

The summit brand rims come in narrow sizes as well, mine are 4 inches wide. My tires are stock size for the old vw cars, I think they are 165/80r15

a 27in tall tire on a 5in or 6in rim is a better route IMO, Looks better stops better and handles better when and if you have to do any sawing

The only thing I'm curious regarding this is the backspacing. My setup is a 68 and I have the specs for the rears but fronts should be the same 68-72 yes?

I do not remember the backspace on the skinny rims I have on the front however when using narrow rims and tires you have a lot of room to play with. When using a wider wheel and tire on the front the backspace must be perfect.

I am looking at the 15X4 and they come in 2 different backspacing options on the 5X4 3/4 bolt pattern. 1.875" and a 2.500". I am planning on going to this front brake setup too so i am sure it matters a little with 4 pot calipers. http://www.jegs.com/i/Wilwood/950/140-10996-DR/10002/-1?parentProductId=1632428

Id run the 1.8's would look better and get the wheel off the brakes neither would interfere with the brakes I don't think tho

I was thinking the same thing for looks. Just figured there were people running the 15X4 already that have kinda done the leg work on this lol. That way I gt it right the first time.

Well I don't remember what the backspacing is on the front rims on my car but I can measure if you want just e-mail me to remind me.

Do you like how these rims look on the front?

Yes I like the look there. Even pushed out slightly more would be good. Thought about using a small bolt on spacer but on the fence about that.
