I can't break the Harmonic Balancer bolt free on my 65 401. It appears to have never been broken for 39 years. First, it is RH tread right? I tried a 20" 1/2 breaker bar with no luck. Then tried my Chi Chang 1/2 zip gun. no luck Any good tricks? The machine shop called today and said the one at the shop now is not the best. This one is on an extra block I have. Everything looks to be original as can be. Are these things available anywhere?
Is the engine still in the car? Place a socket on it, with a big bar. Let the bar rest on the ground (drivers side) and crank the starter.
You need to throw away that Chinese impact wrench and go buy a good CP or IR 1/2" impact that will pull at least 450 ft. lbs. Then that bolt will come right out. It is right hand threads.
Need good impact wrench like "CP or IR 1/2" impact " Thats what it took for my nailhead- I broke a socket and a extension using my breaker bar and 5' pipe. Impact did not even strain, bolt came out (musta loosened it up with the busted socket, eh?)
Bad Boattail is right...if the engine is still in the car. It's by far the easiest way to break that bolt loose.
I bent a valve once doing that on my old Dodge Caravan with the timing belt off the pulleys.ou: I'll never make that mistake again!:af:
Engine is not in the car - extra block Nope, the engine is just a complete short block on a dolly/crated with casters. I think I will have to invest in a good impact. Thanks kg
