Man, something looks funny here. I just bought a 71 GS455 recently. The guy I bought it from gave me this build sheet (in pieces from being under the fuel tank). My car has serial number 1H101258 on the dash VIN plate, BUT the build sheet shows 1H101259...one number off...:Do No:

I have tried scanning the sheet and posting it here, but my scanner is freaking out right now. What on the build sheet lets me know it's a GS455???

You have someone else's and they probably have yours. We have seen that before.

    Great!:af:

As far as I can tell, the 71's are almost impossible to document. Am I right?

Look for the build sheet in the car. Just because the tank sheet was switched does not mean the other was.

The VIN tells us nothing in 71. The cowl tag will identify a GS vs. a clone, and the engine numbers can tell if the engine came with it.

    (I think.)

    Derek,
This is a common thing with buildsheets being the wrong number for the car.I have a 70 Skylark Custom that had 4 sheets in it.1 was under the fender glued to the top. 1 was in the back seat spring, and I'm not positive where the others were at.The funny thing with this car is,that there was also a buildsheet for a 70 ElCamino L79 4 speed with the sheet in the rear seat. The best thing you can do is to look on the side of the tranny case for the number stamped into it to see if your vin is on it.Then, look on the motor to see if its matching too.Being it is a 71(like my 71 GS) it is difficult to prove.I am lucky to have the numbers matching engine, tranny and rear for my car even though I don't have them in it.I have a 70 SP 350,4 speed and a 3.42 in it as opposed to a 3.08 open and TH-350 tranny.Like you,I don't have the buildsheet for my 71 GS car.I have searched the whole car and never found a trace. So,I'm out of luck. The vin will tell you a couple things like if its a GS(34) and the year (1) which you obviously know and have. The cowl will also tell you limited things but not really verify anything to tell if its a Big Block or not.A few other things about your car that will help.If its a BB car,it should have front discs and the steering column shaft that hooks the steering box to the column should not be pressed on, it should have a bolt through it .Hopefully, the motor and tranny #'s will match, and you can feel relatively certain its a Big Block car.
