Today, after a few minutes of driving, oil pressure indicator drops and warning comes on to stop engine. All sounds good. Is the pressure switch a likely problem here? Stock 2008 truck. Has 125,000 miles. Serviced well. Valvoline 5w30 full synthetic. Never had an issue with this truck.
I have been searching. Seems like some 5.3's have had the pressure switch go bad. Autozone has one for $40. I also found a technical service bulleton stating a low or no oil pressure could be a seizing oil pump. I may try the switch for $40 before going to the dealer. No warranty because of miles.
I would bet the $40 for a new sending unit. Here's a better bet $20 - $27 for a sending unit and gauge; http://www.google.com/products/cata...og_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CH4Q8wIwAQ# If, it's the pump,,,
probably the switch.located at rear of intake manifold at top of block.if you lay on top of the engine, you can get to it.second most common problem is the inst cluster. worst case is the rear camshaft bearing spun, blocking the hole to sending switch.but this last one is more common on the 6.0L engine.
I drive about 1000 miles a week, and I fly a bunch also. My sales territory is Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. I'm in Dallas this week, Houston next week. But, if I keep up all this hard work, I can retire in about 35 years!!! If I live that long. haha
My '03 Silverado 5.3 has over 322K on it right now and still going strong. Original running gear- except for the rear end, which was replaced after I was sidehit. But, the rear assembly I replaced it with had a bad pinion bearing that wiped the ring, pinion and "spider" gears out, I took the guts from the original bent housing and stuffed them in the current rear. I would love to get a new truck, but I want to see what's going to happen with the state of the economy this year.
I to would love a new truck but they really think highly of those. In the last couple years I learned that the cost of building a truck isn't that much more than a small car. They just sell better and thus give the companies a bigger profit. I recently went with a friend to a dealership to drop off his Dodge. A new dually with cloth seats stick shift and diesel was close to 55000:shock: . I will just keep buying used myself.:moonu:
I used to always buy new trucks. I used to get one every year or so, but not in these times. I hope to pay off my 08.
This 08 still has 4 years of payments left. I'm so far in the whole, I'll have to drive it over 300k to pay it off. That's why this stupid problem today scared the crap out of me. Spending the $40 was fine, but I didn't want to do a new engine or oil pump.
WOW now i am soooooo glad my 05 colorado is paid for.... people i work with are like you ....the thing is wore out by the time its paid for they are driving 40-50K a year scott
My '06 Silverado oil gauge also went to zero. Cause: the dash pointer fell off! Problem: how to get the stinking cluster out to reset it.o No:
My truck is creeping up on 300k quickly. I want to get a new truck, but I also want to see how high I can get the mileage. I remember when cars cost more than trucks.
Well, Holy Crap!! My 08 Silverado only has 38,000 on it. My daily driver it is. Maybe I should unretire, get a job, need to buy vehicles because of work, NOT!!! Glad you figured out the problem though.
