Ok, wow.....this went from quite possibly a small issue to a very big one....there WAS a head gasket leak which i fixed......any way it ISNT the radiator?
Could still be many things. Like I said, try and turn the engine over by hand. If it's locked up you won't be able to move it. If it moves we can move on to better thoughts. As a side benefit to turning it over by hand, if the starter is stuck you may free it when the flywheel turns. I would think that if the flywheel was stuck you would hear it click as the solenoid engages despite the fact that the gear is already engaged. Did you try jumping the solenoid?
Thanks everyone for your help. Went back this morning with a hammer. What do you know, didn't even have to use it. Started up fine, but it's DEFINITELY the starter. Also, upon driving the car 5 minutes back to my house, the radiator is hot for the top 75%. The bottom 25% of the fins are cool. Anyone know of a reliable, reasonable place in MD that rods out radiators? Thanks again!
Glad to hear she fired up, possibly the starter was heat soaked and just needed to cool off. Check to see if the heat deflector is between the starter and the block? If you are pulling the rad, its a good time to change the water pump if you haven't done it for a few years. When you break the boltsou: taking the water pump off you'll be pulling the rad to drill out the broken bolts, i'd do it all now because theres no pressure to change it , just my 2 bits..... Gord
They will rod them. Tear them down and clear them, then put them back together. Spendy way to go. You can have that done or have a re core of the radiator but unless you want the original part you would be money ahead to buy a new radiator.
When i started in the rebuilding biz,the place had a radiator shop. The problem with roding a core is,if there is a tube or two or three thats bad/leaking/weak,often times they will pinch them off & solder them closed.Which will diminish the cooling capability of the radiator.Recoring is an option, but i would buy a new quality aluminum one myself:TU:
Glad to hear that your problem had such a simple fix. See, now that you were prepared for the worst, it was relatively cheap.:TU:
