Hello I have a 430 and I replaced the wtock points distributor with a mallory dual point it works but I still cant get the steady high RMP's. My question is would an HEI unit from a 455 work and if so would it help? also what would I have to do.

    thanks, will

The HEI requires full time 12 volts. The points distributor uses a resistance wire in the line to the coil positive. You need to replace the resistance wire with a 12 or 14 gauge wire. Trace the wire from the coil +, back to the firewall. It will tee into a wire down to the starter. Remove it all and run your plain wire. If you do a search on HEI, you'll come up with all the info you need. This has been discussed many times before. The HEI from a 455 will work, but the spark curve will probably be wrong for best performance. Also the coil in cap isn't good for high RPM's There are ways around that issue though. The best way is to get your points distributor converted to MSD trigger here: www.davessmallbodyheis.com Then run an MSD box, and be done with it. Good luck.

Another option: rebuild the HEI and use an external coil converter, they're about $25. the rebuild can be tricky though.

If I do the MSD trigger conversion thing would it be easy to run the 6A box. How much does that help? Also how complicated are they to install. Do I have to buy other stuff also? tell all

    thanks alot, will

The MSD trigger conversion, comes with an MSD connector, and plugs right into the box. MSD ignitions are extremely easy to install.
