I recently got 2 HEI distributors from a 77 350 LeSabre That I found while helping my grandpa clean up his garage. Would these fit in my 70 GS and 70 Skylark? Im just concerned that with the larger cap that the fuel line and rad hose mite get in the way.

I put an HEI on my 71 350 and had to redirect the fuel line no problem with the rad hose.

    How did you do that?

my 72 GS350 had a HEI big cap dist when I bought it...
Who ever put it in, had to cut the lower part of the drivers side snorkel to get the air cleaner to fit :Dou:

The fuel line was a rubber line as a steel line would not fit around the big HEI cap.

I converted back to a stock style distributor with a Crane XRi electronic kit.
I was then able to get a pre bent steel line from year one and it fit nicely.
I also have a new lower part of the snorkle but have not put it in yet...I was procrastinating... and as it turns out now I have a 455 swap planned... so I'll wait till after that :beers2:

One thing to watch... your current points distributor uses a resistor wire for power which lowers voltage to around 9 volts when the car is running to help prevent burning the points.
(during start up a full 12 volts is supplied but once you let go of the key it drops to 9v)
I believe Big Cap HEI's require 12 volts all the time...so if you swap, you'll have to add another wire with full time 12 volts. Don't remove the resistance wire (off-white or yellow cloth covered wire in your harness) as you cant buy them and if you decide to go back to stock you'll need a external resistor. Just tape it up into the harness to prevent or disconnect it from the harness block on the firewall.

I think this is the reason even with the Big Cap HEI in my car it didnt start well... cause it only had 9 volts as who ever put it in used the resistance wire for power.

which HEI Distributors will fit the buick 350? Would any Buick HEI fit? So if its set up for a big block you have to get different gears? Is that a pain in the butt? I am assuming other GM Distributors will not fit right? I was going to buy a new one and realized maybe cut some costs if I can get used or salvaged.

Yes you would have to change gears if it is a v6 or 455 hei dist. Find a Buick 350 dist from 75-80 for an easy swap.

The V6 distributor also has only 6 teeth on the reluctor ring :)

i will check on the mid 80's 350 HEI it sounds like an easier deal and just put in new points /cap / rotor or whatever vs. new gears.

I removed the elbow from the bottom of the intake on my GS to get the HEI to fit. Nothing else was even close to touching.

(I forgot about this post) - I was told Petronix II kit works great instead of an HEI distributor. Thoughts?

Do a search on Pertronix. They are a "love 'em" or "hate 'em" thing.

I have been planning to search the boneyards for an stock Buick HEI. Last time I was out there, I saw a '76 LeSabre and I walked away from it without the distributor! :Dou:
