I think I know what rods go where . But the (3) hole location. Witch one? Don't have a clue. Bought headliner from Legendary Interiors. Can someone help me out here?

seems to me the rods are colour-coded but it has been 6 years since I remove my headliner and had a new one installed. I do not remember the colours nor install sequence. I checked the "fisher body" manual but no info. i believe that this topic was discussed several years ago.

If you look at the roof the way it slopes it's obvious what rods go where. It's the holes that I'm confused about? Do I just go with the forward hole at each rod placement.

    (3) holes at each rod placement. ( is that correct?)

I believe, and I have no basis for it, that you should use which ever holes pull the fabric tight. Thinking the 3 holes are to account for variations in the mfg of the head liner. I did one on a beetle years ago and I think it was the same way.

Absolutely, Briz is right. I've done headliners, you should mark the hole for reference when you took it out. But...every HL is different, you put it in the hole that works best.

How tough are these to do? I've never done one and am wondering how much of a pain it is.

I have seen junkyard cars with the hole on the opposite side of the same rod one hole off so they were not perfect.

Having suffered thru many a headliner installation, and just finishing one in a 65 Lark last week, I can offer some insight..

    1. Look carefully for witness marks on/around the holes.. you should be able to tell which hole each one was in, and it will always be the "same" hole for a single rod, on both sides.. Example... if your number one rod was in the front hole on the passenger side, it will be in the front hole on the driver..

The multiple holes account for slight variations in the rod length. Ideally, the rod, when installed in it's "running" condition, will be neither tight, nor loose.. but "just right", as baby bear would say..

    2. Don't even consider not buying new plastic bow clips, if your car has them. 40+ year old plastic breaks, and causes undo swearing.

    3. It's all about the glue man... Forget anything that is for residential users, and doesn't have a 40 page warning manual that comes with it. Super 77... ya, I don't think so.

    You need this product..

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/281094382720?lpid=82&chn=ps

Spend the $30, buy the gallon.. use a 1" paintbrush for application on the edges and top rails.

I only failed on one headliner installation.. and it was because I ran out of this adhesive.. and tried to use some " super 3M stuff"

The headliner must adhere to the body/retainer bracket the first time, or you installation will fail. Bet on it. Especially true of the rear corners, above the sail panels, of a 70-72.

    4. Steam baby... warm that sucker up, and pull... a steamer is your friend. You literally can steam the wrinkles out on some headliners.. the vinyl stuff..

    5. Take your time.. I typically break up a headliner installation into two partial days.. because after about 4 hours working on it the first day, I simply hate it too much to do a good job on the tricky things.. sail panels and visors/coat hooks ect.

    Good luck..

    JW

And a few bottles of barley pop before you start won't hurt.. :puzzled:

how did your headliner project turn out? I just bought a 71 lesabre 4 door hardtop with no headliner and only 2 rods. God only knows what if any clips or hooks even existed or not, and where to find them? and where do I find a headliner? What other options for custom headliner are available? What to do.
