The headlights on my brothers '66 Catalina have decided to stay on highbeam whenever the ignition is on, it will change slightly if you turn on the headlight switch and hit the floor switch to highs. They work like they are supposed when the ignition is off but if it's in accessory or on they stay on. I took the foot switch off and cut them on and it was still on so I tried jumping it to simulate the switch but that didn't work. I then tried removing the headlight switch and after I had they still come on. The only thing that has been done that might cause it is we put in an electronic ignition but it just started doing this recently and it has had the electronic ignition for a while, I can't remember exactly how long but we did it the day after one of the hurricanes so it's been a while. I'm running out of ideas of what it could be or where. o No:
That's an odd one..........sounds like you have a short in the wiring harness. Try pulling fuses one at a time.......perhaps you can isolate what circuit the lights are getting their power source from. My bet is that it's the harness that runs under the hood to the headlights. Check for abrasions or cracked insulation that would cause cross contact between two wires. I can't offer you any suggestion better than that.......good luck. :bglasses:
I just went out and tried pulling the fuses but they still didn't cut off. I did find something helpful tough. When the ignition is off and highbeams are on the A/C blower runs (only on highbeams) so I think it has to do with the A/C somewhere.
Ther must be a short between the blower wiring and the high beam circuit. I don't know if your car has a blower relay, but it could somehow fit into the equation. Sometimes the blower wire can overheat from a bad motor and melt the wire.......maybe it melted into the high beam wire. I would start unwrapping the wiring harness under the hood and look for bad insulation if the relay seems OK. :bglasses:
ok,I found out what it was. A few weeks ago I was replacing a fuse in it and accidently grounded it with my fuse puller (knife) and burnt out a few lines in my knife. Aparently that melted a few wires together and they just started acting up. So I just redid those wires and problem solved
Do not worry. Don't worry. Leave the ignition in the ON position with the engine OFF. The lights will go out in no time at all. Glad I could help here. wild66
i would look for a melted harness near the headlight switch and/or heater controls. maybe a light from the insturment panel or and accessory has fallen out of its home and is resting on the harness melting insulation from and shorting the wires. i have seen before where someone replaced a factory radio with an aftermarket radio and left the original radio's light laying on a harness. keep us posted rotsa ruk! :TU: yuk
oooops!! but then again .... i LOVE redundancy ..... and did i mention how much a adore redundancy...... and by the way .......LOL
