I have run into a problem on my 78 skylark. My headlights went out and then came back on then went out permenantly Except running lights. I have replaced the light switch with no sign of change. Also when I apply my brakes my turn signals will not flash but release the brake and it will Flash. Will an alternator allow enough voltage drop to allow the car to run but not enough to operate headlights/turnsignals. Let me know your thoughts :beer

Check all your grounds. Also, check the fusible links at the starter wires. One is for headlights only, the other for the rest of the electrical system.

Had kind of the same thing happen years ago on my T-Bird (yeah, a Ford). All the gauges starting doing funny things, lights started acting weird. My battery blew up. Replaced battery, everything was fine. About 6 months after that, the alternator went out. Replaced it too. When I replaced the battery, had the alternator checked and it was fine.

    Electrical stuff isn't fun. :spank:

I had a similar problem after I changed the front turn signal lights to "new and improved" LED bulbs. The turn signals would only flash as long as the light were off and not on the brakes. Replaced the bulbs and problem solved. I realize you are using filament type bulbs, but it is too easy not to try. If that doesnt work, I would certainly be suspicious of the turn signal switch. Definately check all your grounds before replacing any parts.

Regarding the headlights, Id be suspicious of the hi-beam switch. DO the hi-beams work at all? Do the turn signals work with the hi-beam switch closed or open? Did all of this happen all at once?

One weird thing to check is the wiring to the floor mounted dimmer switch. It can get loose after time...

    \Happened to me on a 67 LeSabre...

Yesterday evening, I started to look at possible causes and completly look past the Dimmer switch. The plug had melted so I replaced the switch. Now everything is ok.

Frank you won the Diagnostic Challange! :beer
