I was looking at my 61 Lesabre wiring diagram and was wondering if there the same? Looks like 12v goes straight to the headlight switch, strange thing is I didn't see any fuse or fuseable link in the diagram? Is this true 12 v all the time at the switch, the 10awg red wire?

    Thanks!

Headlights are usually protected by a fusible link down at the starter. There's 2 of them, one for the headlights, and one for the rest of the electrical system

Cool thanks Larry, so I should have 12v all the time at the switch?

As long as you can turn your lights on without turning the key on, you have 12v constant.

Thanks for the help guys! It's probably that POS fusible link:( , do these harnesses chaff or short in any special places that might be the root of my problem?

What size link(amps) do I buy?

    John,
I think they sell fusible links bubble packed in the "HELP" line. The links serve as fuses to prevent a fire in the event of a massive short. Any parts place should be able to fix you up with the right ones. Take a look at the wires down near the starter. Besides the + cable, there are two other wires(usually 10 and 12 gauge) The smaller wire is the wire for the headlights. Check it's condition first. Sometimes, when someone replaces one, they don't do a good splicing job, and it comes undone. Your problem could be as simple as that.

    John-

    Before you do anything else-

Do you have a good ground at the headlights? I had this issue 3 yerars ago and I took the entire wiring harness out, forward harness and cabin harness, checked every wire and connection, replaced both my fusible lins, and the headlights still wouldn't work.

It was a ground wire, all the time!

I had stripped the front clip off the car chasing down this gremlin! It was in reality a 5 minute fix. I felt really stupid at the time but it taught me to check ground wires first. Visually the grounds were good, but both of them were bum wires inside.

Hey thanks for all the help guys:TU: I had 12 at the bulkhead engine side and nothing on the dash side, cleaned and reinstalled. Up and running again.
