I went out to write down all the numbers from my extra 455 and TH400 transmission only to not find much on the motor. I found the numbers on the back of the block, but nothing on the front or heads inbetween any of the cylinders. I'm under the impression that for '73 the engines have serial numbers stamped in the front of the block near the passenger side of the timing cover. But I also know the engine codes are supposed to be between cylinder #5 & #7 On my Electra when I has the cover off there no serial #. However it was a early build date car, early September '72 if I remember. Other parts dated back to april '72 (i.e. distributor and carb). Is it possible because of this it will have the numbers in the '72 locations? The extra engine I have is out of a '73 Electra built in October '72. I have not found any number on either of the heads between cylinder #5 & #7. Am I missing something? Are they very lightly stamped? Im lost.

Here is the # off the rear of the block: 1241755

My Trans has a tag attached on the passenger side reading:
    280
    73-BC- 69715
It also has a large "D" stamped on the top of the tail shaft housing.

Check the number on the rear of the block again . I suspect you will find it is actually 1241735.

    Jim,
I checked it again and it is 1241735. Also after much cleaning I managed to get the numbers off the heads. I didn't realize how lightly stamped they were. The block reads : X F 1 4 4

Xf was a 73 big Buick 455 head and the casting number for the block I believe was also used that same year.

Casting date, 144th day of 1973, which just so happened to be May 22, which should have been a Wednesday. Sorry, i don't know what shift though.

Not correct, it is not a date. It is an internal GM number used for warranty tracking. It does not decode to a date.

take off the valve covers and lokk at head part number. Also has date code with letter for month and number for day. These numbers are cast also and are easy to read.
