Hardblock Question

Discussion in 'Race 400/430/455' started by Ian Fitzgerald, Dec 19, 2013.

  1. Hello Everyone,
Mike at AMP is just together my new roller cammed beast.
My question is has anyone run a car out on the highway that has a short fill of hardblock?
Wondering what coolant and oil temps are gonna do.
Here in England have about a 2 hour drive to get to a strip. Wondering if I can drive it or does it need a trailer?
    Best wishes of the season

yes, coolant temp might be alright, but oil temp will rise after about a 1/2 hour. if you run it long even coolant temp will rise. should really run a oil cooler.

I'm running a part fill block (to bottom of water pump inlets in front, a bit higher in back). I saw no difference in water temperature before/after fill. I do not have an oil temp gauge, but I did not notice a drop in oil pressure (which usually goes along with high oil temps). I have driven the car for 1.5 hours at highway speeds without issue.

I think the water temp kind of fools the real numbers its taking temp from upper part of block or heads which might be cooler but bottom part of block and cylinders and oil will be hotter then you think.

    The oil will get hotter.

My advice is to run an oil cooler and a oil temperture guage.

Be conserned if the oil temperture gets over 230 degreese. About 250 degreese, the oil will break down.

  6. Thank you everyone. Points noted.
Oil temp gauge for sure. When speaking to Mike, he didn't thing a stock style, albeit upgraded oil pump wasn't man
enough to drive an oil cooler. Other than that have up graded, rad, fans and water pump. And with a girdle and larger
oil pan, should help keep the synthetic oil cooler.
    Best wishes of the season
