I just got done putting my 455 back together. I had torn the top end apart this past week to finally detail the engine, and to replace some parts I'd been stockpiling. The 3 biggest changes I made were going to 3/8ths fuel line from 5/16ths, swapping out the Offenhauser 360 intake with a B4B and finally putting in the 4 core radiator that Dave Berry had given to me, along with going from a 160 to a 180 t-stat. The difference now is unbelievable. The car always had alot of power, but now 1st and second gear are almost unusable. Any blip of the throttle in either gear at any RPM and the tires are blown away. I also notice that the engine will spin to 5500 much faster then it did before the parts swap. What the heck did I do???? Is the Offenhauser intake that bad? Or could it be a combo of the better fuel delivery, different intake, and temps staying at 180* all the time? I am waiting on a set of ignition wires. As soon as I get them installed I'll post a pic of the fresh engine. For those who saw what my engine used to look like, you'll be shocked!!!
My guess would be the intake swap, the offy has a very bad alignment to the head, which causes the intake to be very peaky in it's power band. Plus going to the b4b, since it's a dual plane, it really favors low rpm power, so I think that is where you noticed your difference from. Jim Burek
Re: Re: Happy Days!!! Jim, would that explain why the engine used to fall off drastically above 4500 rpm with the Offy? o No:
Re: Re: Re: Happy Days!!! It could, I have seen some very peaky numbers with the offy intake. It can be fixed though. Jim Burek
Well I finally got off my lazy butt and installed the new cap rotor and wires, so I figured while I am out there I'd take a few shots.
Not a concours resto by any means, but for those who have seen what my engine used to look like, I think you all will agree it was a major improvement.
Looks pretty. If it wasn't the manifold it has to be a miracle. . With the additional water capacity I would have stayed with the 160.
Finished? Mike: Are you planning on being in Kearney, NE this weekend??:Brow: Hope to see you there, the engine looks great. I just wish mine didn't look so grungy. I only had time to paint the outside of the car Jim :3gears: :TU:
Dave, The 1st box is a Mallory Hyfire 1a unit. The other box is an MSD rev limiter. Figuring out how to wire them together was how do I say it... A pain in the a**!! I would eventually like to get a box that has both already , but the Hyfire came with the car and I got the rev limiter for a whopping $20, and they work so I figure I'll hold off for awhile. I'm what you'd call a cheap Pollak.
Jim, Thanks for the compliment. I was planning on going to Kerney but I found out last week my health insurance changes at the end of the month and the new insurance will not cover treatment by my doc in Denver. So I'm heading out to Denver this weekend to have surgery on the 21st to get in under my old insurance policy before it ends. I'll be out there till the 30th. I was originally going to have this crap done in Late Sept. early October, but I don't have much of a choice in the matter anymore. Either get it now, or wait till my work comp case gets figured out which could take who knows how long. I really wanted to meet all you guys and watch your cars run. Hell, I would have even helped yas out if you needed it. Next year for sure!!! Any of you guys out west going to Salem?
OK, so here's the deal: You drive out to denver down I-80, and plan on a rest stop around, say, Kearney, NE on Saturday, around 9:00 am. Getting any ideas???:Brow: Seriously, I hope the surgery goes well, and we'll miss you at the races.:beer Good Luck with all issues!:TU: Jim:3gears: Edit: PS I resemble that remark, too!ou:
Jim, Funny you should bring that up, because the first thing I thought of was that I could stop at Kearney on the way through. Unfortunatly my wife informed me she has to work that Saturday so we aren't leaving until Sunday. By the time we roll through Kearney I would suspect much of the action will be over with.
