Semper Fi Marines..........Carry on! Cpl USMC 1968-1970 USMCIR 1970-1974 2nd Bn. P.I.S.C. Recruit Depot
I have the greatest respect to anyone who "stands in harms way" to protect our rights and freedoms regardless of country. A tip of my hat to the U.S. Marine Corps on their birthday, and prayers for their safety from a Canadian.
Oh sheet!!! I gotta say something. My brother in-law was a Marine!!!He is my HERO!!! He was a Captain flying Black Hawks in Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I wrote him ALL the time! I thought he got to go to an air base and take a shower, along with a bed to sleep in. WRONG!!! He told me they slept under their birds.Damn! We visited my sister at Camp Pendleton. He had to leave again, what a pain for the family, to practice with Australian troops. This guy is NOT a hugging guy. I was sleeping on the couch when he left to go to Australia. He picked me up off of the couch, gave me a BIG hug, and told me, "You wrote me more than my brother! Thank you!!!" Believe me, it was my pleasure!!!!!!! He wrote me a Dear John letter from the war, hilarious!!!!! I still have it!!!!!! I have a very cool DVD from his tour in Somalia. WOW!!! You should see what an errant missile does when it hits a demperster dumster, hauls azz down the street, taking out a bunch of people. Whoa!!!!!
Chuck, I see you're out there. I can't tell you how much FUN was had a Camp Pendleson!!! My brother in-law would always call me, talk real quiet, and tell me, "You have NO rights inside a military installation. They can search your vehicle for anything!" I always had Mary Jane on me. So I put it in my air cleaner. There was NO way those German Shepard's were gonna smell that coming through the exhaust system on my van. Coyotes.... The base is FILLED with them!!! We'd go out at night, my kids, and my nephews, I'm drunk as a skunk, and the kids ALL have BB guns. We're looking for coyotes!!! Never shot any, but we had fun!!!
Well, not a Marine, BUT... I was in the US Navy. Spent a good portion in the Gator Navy. (USS Fort Snelling LSD 30, USS Nassau LHA 4), so we took you there. I was in main propulsion, so I REALLY took you there, like it or not... Had my share of fun, and NOT fun with you guys. Still remember 'falling up the stairs' outside a club where I inadvertently started a sort of fight between the SNIPES (Engineers) and TREES (Marines) in an incident with a Gunny Sergeant on shore patrol. The Marines held their morning muster on the other side of the flight deck from us. Gunny came up to our group and had a few words with me while we were waiting for the officers to come and give out the morning info/BS. My div-O wanted to know why the Gunny came over to me during quarters, and I explained, embarrassed as hell. Never ever argue with a BIG BAD Gunny when YOU are drunk... You too can 'fall up steps'...
Steve, I was aboard the US Dubuque LSD 8 for a few hours ( a week or so) back in 1969 hit the beach in my Amtrac (my MOS 1833) I loved the chow aboard ship Thursday steak day A dollar 10 for a carton of Camels! packaged in foil to keep them fresh
The only ship I was ever on was the U.S.S. Saginaw, an LST. Once for helo operations and once for landing craft operations. I felt like John Wayne both times... I don't remember the food but I do remember the bunks! You had to decide whether you wanted to sleep on your stomach or your back before you got in because once you were in, you couldn't turn over.
Me at LZ Falcon, Camp LeJeune, NC summer of 1984. The only picture I have on my computer here at work.
