I know the next Buick I build will be a 71 GSX "Re-Creation" in Limemist
Nothing wrong in my book with clones. For most of us working stiffs it's the only way to play now. :beer

    Dress it up a little....for 1K

Maybe with some Rallye wheels, GSX stripes (but no badging)
and GS chrome rocker panels.... I can park up with the
    "GOATS" next season!

    Already have:
    146,000 original miles
    New paint
Re-chromed bumpers (front & rear) new rubber tail light stripes
    Dual Exhuast/glass packs
    New head liner/new seats
One of the few Skylark's WITHOUT hide-away wipers!
    Chrome air cleaner cover.
Hopefully worth more now than what I paid for it $3,250? ( Out-the-Door)
    in 1972.

    Gotta Love It!

You do realise that not all of us can afford a real GSX don't you. There were only about 800 built over a 3 year period so real ones are hard to find and out of the price range of a lot of people when they do come up for sale. The GSx paint scheme is one of the best that GM ever came up with, so it only stands to reason that quite a few people would make clones out of there cars. Nothing wrong with it in my eyes.

    my 2 cents

The difference is: What would you pay for an original painting and what you would pay for a copy or print of that same painting? May look the same? Both made from paper and paint/ink.

One is the original and that is where the value lies. Your buying history and art, not mearly a car.

Collecting cars is a art form much like collecting rare and fine items.

If you found a coin that was one of only a handfull made, what would it be worth?

The problem is we all know what we could of bought these cars for years ago, and we kick ourselfs in the asses we did not hawk eveything we owned a did it. Or better yet Kick our Wifes in the ass for not letting us and telling us we were crazy. How many times have we all dragged our wifes over to the pc and tell her to look at a car on ebay, and tell her " You should of let me buy that car two years ago when it was cheap" Told you so!

I have no problem with clones.
Just build a GSX clone out of a plain Skylark as opposed to a rare desirable GS that is collectable and desirable on it's own.

I just have a regular, numbers matching original Skylark 350 and I'm "fixing it up" to get it back to a somewhat original look that will satisfy me. That means no frame off, no replacing every nut and bolt, I just want it to satisfy me. No concours restoration, no cloning, just a nice driver. We should all do our cars the way WE want them done. Ask the man who did the X-Camino, he (Duane) would probably agree. Or not.

    Merry Christmas!

    Ray,

Your GN is tempting as i have owned them before i am the former founder & president of the Minnesota club they are fun cars but i like the older technology better. Insted of me buying a vette i would trade my car plus $$$

    Building a real GSX

Guys get a clue.. to restore a real GSX is about 1,000 hours of work on the body and chassis... plus parts if the car comes in pieces.... the one on eBay would take at least that much...so if you want a first class resto, then the really good shops in the East US will charge about $50 to $75 an hour for labor. That is what the Mopar and Corvette community is paying and that is why the cars are so valuable. Consider the rarity of a 1969 ZL1 Camaro... just 69 made and only 40 left. One sold at the Mecum auction in $800,000 plus a 5% sale commission. Guys with big bucks are paying for the cars because they think they will go up in value down the road. A colloection of 5 Yenko cars sold for $1.75 Million, thats right $1.75 Million and the man never looked at the cars. Consider that for the GSX's, they are an undiscovered musclecar car at this point. When there are no other cars left to restore then the collector car value will climb. But the resto has to be first class, like John Arangio's car, that was on eBay and did not sell for $165,000.

    Thanks for visiting my thread

OK, guys here is where I am going with all of this. I can buy this car for $3,500 or less and I need to know if this is the type of car that can be or should be cloned. It has a 455 engine that comes with it although it was originally a 350 GS. Thanks for your help.

There is no reason you could not clone that car into whatever, either a GS or a GSX. I think it's a decent start since you already have the ram air hood, and you also got the bucket seats w/consle shifter. And it has the rear spoiler too. Is it a 70 or 71?

Looks like a 70 with correct gs grill too. Figure the hood is at least $400-600 in raw form, grille around $400 from a source on the board, spoiler is in excess of $200, throw in the expense of the BBB changeover and you're easily two grand ahead of the game to start with. If your really lucky it might have disc brakes or possibly a posi unit.
