i had the gs out for cruise night and on the way home i see a chevelle behind me looking like he wants to race, so when i get to the four lane in the highway, no other cars around so i slow down and put it in first, he does the same. from about ten mile an hour role i hit it. all i here is squealing tires and exhaust, as he leaves me like i was tied to a stump!!! it didn't bother me though cuz it was my son driving my chevelle so i still won... by the way both cars are factory stock, so much for the big bad Buick:Do No:

Good story! What 396 does the chevelle have? If it was the 375 horse L-78 then no wonder it was so quick. :TU:

Great story! Made me grin thinking about my father and I racing. Also nice to hear from another guy on here that isnt anti Chevy. I love my chevy and buick just the same for different reasons. :TU:

I think its funny too as I took out amny a ss396 with my 1969 351 windsor Mach 1 back in the 70's. Unless the 396 is a special one ot built they werent that fast. That said a GS455 with no mods and not tuned will not be all that fast either. make it a Stage 1 and properly set up I bet it would turn out differently. The frist car to beat me on the street was a 69 Cobra Torino with a 428 CJ

the chevelle is the 350 hp version factory holley, and 390 gears. the buick is a 70 all original with 290 gears. i will be tweaking the buick with a stage one cam and some 342s ??. though it might be closer i feel the out come will be the same:Dou: sorry buick guys

Ah, the gears! That's the big difference!

I had a high school friend with a Chevelle with solidly built HiPo 396 that I raced regularly in my non-stage GSX. Both cars were stick cars. He could never beat me and it really frustrated him. Finally he put 4.11 gears in and from light to light he was happy as he could finally trounce my 3.42's. His smile faded the first time he took his Chevelle up on the highway, however!

Anyway, sounds like a fun time. It's very cool that your son is into cars. My son is 13 and hasn't caught the bug yet. I hope he does soon!!!

A big gear disadvantage for the Buick. Probably not even posi either. If both cars had the same gears it would be different story. The question is after the Buick won, would the story even be reveled at all. Back in the day I enjoyed spanking 396 SS Chevelles and Novas. After they lost the look on their face was priceless !!! Steve,

I think there are more than enough Buick guys around with properly set-up '70 GS 455's that would show your, errr, your son's Chevelle some tail lights... sorry Chevelle ... I don't think your heart is all that into the Buick, anyway. Put some comparable gears in the GS and tune it. The 2.9X gears are highway gears.

Funny, last time home I met up with a beautiful SS396 Chevelle, I blew him away from 3 stop lights before he waved and turned off. And my car isnt running to full potential...........

Another chevy guy:moonu: that bought a GS and tunes like Chebby. Never had any problem with 396's with my 71 455. To include camaro's. Sell the Gs go back to chebby's

I'm sittin' here chuckling because I can't count the number of Chevelles (some real SS's for sure and some not, you know how that goes) which have met the same fate. Camaros mixed in as well.

didn't mean to strike a nerve, was just telling a story of some father and son time, thought some here could relate to that. outcome of the race doesn't matter to me. if i was worried about beating some one, my cars would be modified for that, not all factory original. heck the Buick still has its from the factory exhaust. anyway again didn't mean to offend anyone

That probably wasn't the best choice of words if you didnt want to provoke a reaction. Especially here. None the less its great you and your son are enjoying your cars.:TU:

Not offended here, but if your on a Buick site and say " so much for the big bad Buick " you know were going to give you a little bit of a hard time, in good fun of course. As far as Father and Son time, you have a big thumbs up on that one. :TU: John Biggs.

I hope father and son had and have a great time. I can only quess that you are new to buick's. You have not been treated like a second class muscle car. I grew up in a buick. It was a 4-door 350 car. I had to listen to all the chebby jokes and " I have a small block Camaro runs 12" only to see the in the rear veiw. The listen the next day to all of the usual. Then it was the ss396 chevelle's with the big block chevorlet. Then I got my GS and they all went away. One had a L-78 honest to good running car. He got me out the hole but by the end of second bye-bye. We run like this every weekend. It just does rub me the wrong way when someone buys a GS that is bone stock has been but in a time bubble and runs it against a Car that is his chebby I mean baby. Really if you want the GS to run and still be stock. Listen, talk, and read how to tune. Yes gears will help, but I think just a good power tune is all that is needed. That way we don't half to listen to "i had to change the cam to make it run."

I bet that was fun. Good times.

The last car I had before my Buick was a '67 SS396 Chevelle. The usual upgrades and 4.56 gears. Car ran good for what it was. Best was a 13.20 @ 102 and a 2.0 60 ft on street tires with open headers.

The Skylark. More cubes but less compression, less cam, Q-jet instead of Holley d.p., 3.42 gears and about 300 more lbs. 12.78 @ 105 w/1.85 60 ft through the mufflers. I loved my Chevelle but my Buick woulda killed it. All depends on the combo.
