This is a continuation of an earlier thread that must have been deleted. Anyway in 2007 at 2700ft elevation GS 455 finished the season at 8.45 and 440 six pack super bee finished season at 8.7 with a season best of 8.59

They are both stock setups. this year the buick got a sp400 3000 stall and a new demon carb and is now running in the mid to high 8.2 the slopar i mean mopar got a new tci trans and 3500 stall. frame connectors an is now running in the low 8.40's. And an added bonus was that i got to hear all winter how my buick better get used to seeing his super bee's tail light. NOT!!!!!

If you really want to make him sick, switch to a larger carb (850CFM or larger) and add a little more gear (3.73 or 4.10). Buicks like to breath!!!

I was told that the 750 demon flowed like an 850 holley. So do you think a 850 demon would have been better. Besides i usually get him on the tree by two to three tenths pluss i get 1.80 60 ft to his 1.90 60 foot so even though our ET's are somewhat close it doesn't look like it. and he really hates loosing to me this year because of all the smack talk this winter. I wouldn't mind to run a 4.10 gear but i do drive the car to and from the track sometimes 45 miles.

Some of the guys here on the board are running 1050 CFM carbs. The only way to know for sure is to see what amount of vacuum the intake manifold is pulling at wide-open throttle at the top end of a dyno run. More than 1-inch Hg usually means that the carb is too small.
If you can find a copy, there is a good expanation of this in the Winter 2002 Hot Rod magazine Engines special edition. Basically, the 455 Buick that they built originally used a 750 demon carb with a 1 inch spacer, and it made 555 hp and 570 ft/lbs of torque. When they changed over to a 975 CFM race demon carb, they picked up 8 hp and 6 ft/lbs of torque. Like I said, these engines like to breath.
It would be hard to run a 4.10 gear driving 45 miles to the track, unless you went to a built 200-4R trans so you could use the overdrive to keep the gas mileage at a reasonable level. Are you running just 1st and 2nd gear in the 1/8 mile?
From the numbers you mentioned, you only have the guy by a little more than a tenth of a second (8.29 to 8.44). If you snooze a little in the lights he and his buddy's could have some fun at your expense.
Let us know how it all plays out!

Earlier in your post you said " They are both stock set ups " Upon futher reading they're both not very stock. Or at least some of the engine components. Why does the word stock have such a wide meaning ??? :Do No: It Should be 100% or very close to what it was out of the factory. Otherwise it's not stock. John.

I have now been informed that he will be buying one of those 650hp 440 stroker motors. That is the problem with the mopar guys, they have cubic dollars. The crappy thing about that is that i will have to help him put it in.

So switch a couple of plug wires while you are under there. He probably won't even be able to tell the difference once he opens up the headers!
If he goes with the stroker 440 then your only hope (without making major changes to the motor) is to get a better gear and bigger tires. You are going to have to set it up to hook hard and finish the 1/8 mile at the top of 2nd gear. It will not be as friendly on the street or at the gas pump. Eventually this sounds like it is going to be decided by the golden rule (He who has the gold makes the rules). But don't give up yet.
There are lots of guys here on the board who are running similar set-ups to yours. Contact a few and see if they can give you some tips on making your car hook, and getting your 60ft times down into the 1.60's. Make the mopar guy earn any win lights he gets by doing your homework and tuning in your combination to run as good as it can.
By the way, what kind of reaction times are you both running? Are you using a linelock, a transbrake, or foot braking the car? Is the s/p trans set on a timer to go from high stall to low stall during the run? All of these things can make a difference in your E.T. Good Luck, Randy

    Thanks Randy,

I have no tire spin at all. I usually get .006 to about .030 his best is in the .100 range but usually in the .300's we both are using drag radials and hook very well on day's that vht is used but on street legal events when they don't prep the track it is near imposable for either of us to hook. We are both foot braking. I am using timer. I have been playing with it as much as i can. We get three time trials before we have to dial. so i use my first pass to play with setup then i decide what i want to do on the next two and leave it. besides as far as bracket racing goes the fastest we can dial is 8.20 in our class. I am currently in first place in points and therefore I am making little adjustments each event as to keep the consistency good. As for the poor mopar(he is a friend), he is having a hell of a time on consistency only because he keeps changing things to catch my ET. He is so focused on beating me heads up in the time trials that he has lost all focus of the bracket racing. So not only does he have to listen to how come you are loosing to that ugly buick heads up he also has to listen to why does he only have 30 points and i have 110 points. He definitely has the gold so i will loose the heads up game eventually. He can not stand the harassment the rest of the guys give him at the cruise-in. It also doesn't help that i am 37 and he is 64. And you couple that with the fact that this all started with him not being a racer but a cruiser, and of course him with the perfect looking car and mine well it is the 72 in my signature. so he was always talking smack and me saying to bring it up and run it on the track not on the bench. all this put together has him seeing red. He can out spend my hole years budget in five minutes and not even miss it. But I will say one thing, Buicks have a hole lot more respect now at the cruis-ins.

I am glad you added that last bit of information. What is the next faster bracket class (7.80 or?) that they run at your track? Chances are he will be running in a different class anyway once he switches the motor. If you are only a tenth or so away from running right on the 8.20 number, then you shouldn't have to change much on the car. Just keep doing what you are doing. It sounds like you have the mopar guy psyched to the point where he has lost all focus on the championship! The mental side of the game is just as important as the driving side.
Of course, the down side is that if you win the track championship, you are going to have to paint the car! We would love to see a picture of the trophy next to your car at the end of the season. Good luck, Randy

I agree, you really need to get your 60' times down. As Greg Gessler proved a few years ago winning FAST class racing - you need to seriously leave on the Mopars because we can't match their top end charge/mph

I already put one of those tri-shield air fresheners hanging from his rear view mirror. He was a good sport about it.:TU::grin:
