I'm working on something different, but not sure of appearance issues, for installing a 3rd Brakelight on my GS.

Please save the "originality" lectures, I'm not doing a Show Car restoration!
I'm only asking for help with ideas, here. :( :Do No:

    My choices are:

Straight LED lightbar in Spoiler rear (as seen in Cadillac Rear Spoilers)

Transparent "GS" emblem in center of spoiler (lights up RED, with Brakes applied) :Brow:

Cutting out "BUICK" letters in '70 Rear Bumper, and backlighting them RED, with Brakes applied

    Other ideas? :Do No:

I'll see if Alan on this board can post a picture of his 3rd brake light. It is the long LED type mounted in the spoiler.

Make sure you wire it directly to the brake light switch. If not it will blink with the turn signals. It is more work to run the wire all the way from the light to the brake switch but it will look better.

You could do the long strip under the spoiler where the stainless molding goes along the trunk lip. Just an Idea

I like the "Transparent "GS" emblem in center of spoiler" idea the best. That would be trick!

I'm not trying to "copy" one, I'm trying to "invent" my own, with other ideas/suggestions, specifically for the GS.

I'd definitely like to see that Spoiler, though, because that may be a deciding factor of whether I like it or not, to do a similar style! :bglasses:

Thanks, Jimmy, that would be awesome! :TU:

I always thought that the "Buick" nameplate between the tail lights on the '70 bumper should be red lit anyway.

Even if you don't go that wy for the 3rd brake light, Scott, making that nameplate light up as a daytime running lamp would let folks know what just passed them :TU:

Now that's a good idea! :TU:

I like your third idea the best. The red light backing up the BUICK letters. That would be cool.

I vote for the lights in the spoiler.

Convertible? If so, roll bar with 3rd light :Brow:  looks nice.

For us '69 Guys, its a No-Brainer - just Pop a red bulb in place of the clear one....quick splice into the brake lite harness and time for a :beer

I actually thought of doing that Alan, except leaving the clear lens in. :bglasses:

Not Full Hardtop, Not Full Convertible.

    Roll Bar, yes! :TU:

I may consider doing both, lighting the Buick nameplate, as the "running light" (great suggestion, Chris), AND the GS emblem in the Spoiler, for the Brakelight! :bglasses:

I took pictures of my Star Wars air cleaner, last night, as I finally got the LED's installed, but the pictures wouldn't turn out in the dark for some reason! The thing just has this eerie Red glow coming out of both of the side ducts! I Love it! It lights up everything in Red (engine compartment, car in front of me...) :eek2:

Keep the ideas coming, guys, I'm getting inspired! :bglasses:

I was thinking the Black background with Red BUICK letters! :Do No:

Hmm, now you've got me thinking, Ken! :TU:

Hey Scott- how about using a '69 style swing away GS trunk lock? That would take a little metal massaging but might be a subtle thing that would keep folks saying whoa...whoa! Is that supposed to be like that?

I'm trying to get a whole different effect, Chris. I'm not planning on driving this car during the daytime too much, or even frequently. No one would notice that trunk lock in the dark (and only Buick guys know that, anyway). I'll probably drive it about 2-4 times/month, mostly at night, mainly for the lighting effects (LED Star Wars Air Cleaner, LED GS Grille emblem, LED GS Fender emblems, LED Spoiler emblem, Buick nameplate).

LEDs can be left on Indefinitely, and they use very little battery draw. I'm also considering hooking up a Solar charger, while the car is in the driveway at home, when I'm not driving it. The lights will come on automatically at night, with a sensor, but can be switched off manually!

Just a few ideas, but it's coming together little by little! :bglasses:

    Scott,
Here is my idea that you may have....Have the guy who makes the plastic GS emblems make a plastic bumper Buick nameplate and install a set of small LED lights hehind it then attach it to the bumper. You can get some tiny lights from a Radio Shack in different colors.I am not sure how dark red the plastic is but maybe he can make them in clear too.

Pat, that is MY idea, which is why I've been asking about it! :TU: I'm going to install those "plastic" GS emblems in the Spoiler, as the 3rd Brake light, and I may just light up the nameplate as a running light!

I'll be doing a lot of fabrication, myself, on my GS, so it will definitely be unique. European sports car styling with American Musclecar performance!

I may make those emblems, myself, from a box of originals that I have, too! I'll have to look and see what I can use or make, first.

Here's a picture with the light on. It's during the day so it looks washed out a little, it really stands out at night.
