Ok after puting everything back together (I thought) I found my ground strap. I took lots of pics but somehow missed one of the strap. I know it go's on the right rear of the eng and I belive bolts to the firewall but not sure about where on the block. is it poss it bolts to the rear intake manifold bolt?

Bolts to one of the accessory drive bolt bosses on the cylinder head. Heads have the same bolt holes on both ends.

To be precise the ground strap should bolt to the hole that is at the lower right of the head, closest to the exhaust manifold. On the firewall, the strap should attach with a self tapping sheetmetal bolt and is located on the perimeter of the a/c or heater case. I have seen them moved for better affectiveness to one of the other existing holes in the firewall that is inboard of the box just below the vacuum canister.

I think it may vary on location depending on where the car was assembled. Flint, Fremont, KC may have differences.

N360ll I think you are confusing ground straps. I think he is talking about the one on the back of the engine. It does not attach to the heater case. As mentioned before it attaches to the head but with a 3/8" bolt that was only 1/2'-3/4" long. The other end actually attaches to the passenger side outboard screw that holds on the voltage regulator. The plated steel on the regulator provides a good ground.

The origal bolt on the back of the head may have had a star washer on it as well for better bite.

I thought the ring of the strap had a star washer type pattern stamped right into it.

NAte, You may be correct But I think the repro straps do not have one so I used a star washer on the bolt. Maybe that is what I remember? Getting old.:Do No:

It does. The negative battery cable I believe has a washer like that.

Eagle, assembly manuals and service manuals have pics of all this. Do you have them? Martin, you are correct the battery cable bolts have the star washers on them.

when i purchased my 72 gs, there were two ground straps - one from the head to the firewall and the other from the head to the frame. so when i rebuilt the car, i re-installed both (new) ground straps.

All the wiring info and schematics are in the assembly, chassis service manual and Fisher body manual for each year. That is the most detail that exists as far as I know..
