Ok, I have a question for you buick guys. I have a 1972 Buick Sylark Convertible. My chevy friends say that the car is real heavy. (Like 3800 pounds) The car originally had a 350 with a TH 350 trans. I have an aluminum headed 455 that will be put in along with a TH400. Do any of you know how much this car weighs with either motor. Thanks, Blair
Lite Weight I have a 72 Buick GS Conv originally a 350. At the track, I weight in at 3965, with me in it. Now with a 455, At the track. I weight in at 3975, with me in it. My weight is about 190lbs. That is also with the spare tire in it. So your 3800lbs is probably right on track.
Re: Lite Weight did you strip anything out between the swaps? or is this just the diff between a stock 350 weight vs stock 455 weight?
Do your Chevy friends realise that your car is comparable to a 1972 Chevelle convertible in terms of weight? Or do they assume it's overweight because the nameplate that says "Buick" adds on 500 lbs?
did you strip anything out between the swaps? or is this just the diff between a stock 350 weight vs stock 455 weight? I did not strip anything out of the car. It was just a engine swap. I thought there would be a bigger difference. If I remember correctly, both times were just below a half tank of gas also. I did come in over 4000 pounds once with my 350. But then I did remove things out of my interior. example; Horseshoes, In cabinet speakers ..... But I think there was 3/4 of gas in the tank. __________________
huh, I've seen numbers that state 350 weights about 450lbs, 455 around 620. your numbers seem to go against that... interesting iron heads and intakes/exhausts on both motors??
My 70 GS convertible, with my #200 in it and a half tank of gas, 455 and th400, weighs in at 4300 lbs. My car does have a/c, ps, pb, spare tire, and those heavy factory bucket seats. I also have front and rear sway bars. It's a real porker. The car probably weighs about 3900 lbs. dry.
lighten up Phil Phil, take the spare tire out of the trunk with the jack & you will pick up a tenth! Randy
reply to gross wight of 72 Yes I am trying to lighten up the car, especially if it weighs what people are saying. I have put in a 9 inch rear end with dick miller suspension, which I think is ligher, no spar tire or jack, no heater, no ac, all air duct work will be out, no power steering, no inner fenders, no power brakes, aluminum radiator, 455 has aluminum head intake and oil pan, I am also using dual 3.5 inch exhaust but it will not go past rear end, aluminum driveshaft, 15 x 8.5 and 15 x 3.5 wheels, fiberglass hood, no front sway bar, a few front support brackets have been taken off, tubular cross member, I also have sanded down the car to bar metal and then some (the last car I did this to I lost 80 lbs) The only extra parts I am adding as wieght wise will be a chrome moly 6 point cage, and a 10 lbs nitrous bottle. Car has bench seat. I was just wanting to get a base wieght, but if one of you guys has a car that has had simular mods, I would like to know the weight of it. And yes my chevy freinds bash the car all the time because its a "Buick" I hope to prove them wrong. Thanks for your help. Blair Phillis
The secret trick is to box off the frame, chassie, and roll cage and then compress as much helium into them as you can. Matt uzzled:
iron heads and intakes/exhausts on both motors?? Correct. I even went from 14" rims and tires with the 350. to 15" rims and tires with the 455. Not sure if that would make any difference. Also went to TH400 Transmission There is no A/C in the car. With a bench front seat. automatic on the column. My Avatar picture was taken at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR). Loacated in Minnesota That is were all weights were taken.
Re: reply to gross wight of 72 that makes them pretty lousy friends- and pretty ignorant about cars and engines Hey, have you asked them what engine won the last Car Craft big block shootout? Hint: wasn't the 454 or even a Chevy
