I have a few problems yet to figure out. I kept getting frustrated with the project because I had no clue as to what I was doing when it came to the timing, so I took my car to a trusted mechanics shop and they did get the car running. It's running open manifolds, w/ no exhaust system what-so-ever. It backfires every so often and I never run it too long. It's got a 1 year old 1/4th a tank of gas in it! But at least it starts and runs. Now, I got it home driving it about 10 mph all the way, but when I opened the hood this morning, I never thought to look before, but the firing order doesn't seem right. I thought it was 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 for a SBB 350? 1970 350-2 buick engine is what I have, and the firing order going clock wise around the dist. is something like 1-4-2-3-6-5-7-8 or something like that, I will go out later and write it down. I didn't even know a car could start if the firing order was off!?!?!? What's going on here guys???? I am so confused right now, my head hurts!   :Do No:

    Thanks -Cody

firing order is 18436572 thats correct
    going clockwise around dist.
driver side of eng is 1,3,5,7 pass 2,4,6,8
engine will run if enuff plug wires are right
get some good gas and change the fuel filter
if you get a dual exhaust kit from a 65-72 abody(skylark)
it will work on your car with a little work from a muffler shop
will help if you get a dual exhaust trans crossmember or have yours
    modified

    Thanks Andy,

I had no idea that a car could even fire, or for that matter even RUN if the firing order was off. I am going to drive the car to the exhaust shop tomorrow at 9 a.m. sharp and have them put on a single exhaust with a cherry bomb muffler. They gave us a 365 dollar estimate just for that exhaust system, if I had the funds I would like to have dual exhaust w/ maybe flowmasters or even dual cherry bombs but I don't think that's gonna happen for a while, at least not untill I get some money. All I want now is my car to run and run smooth and reliably, that's all I am asking for as of now, and then later on I can start putting on small mods such as dual exhaust and such. I will rearrange the spark plug wires in the correct firing order monday when I drive it home from the exhaust shop. Then it should run better hopefully, without backfiring so much. Again, thanks! I shall let you all know how things go! :TU:

if its backfiring and running rough, its more than likely a plugwire or 2 or 3 got turned around. I accidently did that on my car.

Well guys, thanks for the info, I put the plugs in their correct firing order and it has no backfires or hesitations or anything likewise what-so-ever, she runs like a beauty should. I fixed many problems just by that one problem of the incorrect arrangement of the plugs, so that really helps out quite a bit. All that's left now is an exhaust system needs to be put on, oil change, and some new gas and it should run pretty good. I might want to turn down the idle screw on the carb. a bit, as it seems to idle higher than I would like it to, although a higher idle speed does seem to make it warm up a bit faster, and it seems to help leaving from a stop sign as it gives it some umpha!

    Thanks again!

    What???

$385 for a single glasspack system!!! holy crap dude, thats a ripoff!
you can get an entire dual system with quality mufflers for that price.then spend a day under the car bolting it up with clamps & take it to a welder, shouldnt be that much :)

You must be going to Midas or Meineke.
Look for a small local independent shop.
The franchise ones are ripoffs. I had dual glass packs put on my
56 for $200. Your price sounds pretty high.

Yeah guys, I know, it's not a fair price, at least for me, the customer, as they seem to be looking to turn a really quick buck or two on me, but I don't have that many options really! Roger, actually I am going to an independent and small local shop. I called around to other places nearby and they want either the same amount or more. The bad thing is, I can't drive my car far or too long w/out the exhaust as it is hard on the motor to do that, and all the other shops around my area are quite a ways from me to drive there, and towing, don't even get me started on towing, I had to pay 35 dollars(cheapest towing service around) to have my car towed 2 blocks, from my house to the mechanic shop. So figure at least anywhere from 3 to 40 miles away for other shops around, too far to drive the car as it is and too costly to have it towed. If I had it towed to any other shop I'd already have 1,000 dollars or more invested in towing and then not counting exhaust. I don't think I am going to do that, so I am stuck with this shop, although pricey, they are a trusted shop and everybody around swears by them. I have gotten good deals on parts before I did the motor swap on my car from there when I had the v6 in and running in the car. Good feedback, but not always the cheapest. Can't win for losing!

for 130 you can get a header back system for a body from summit racing
mandrel bent 2 1/4 with mufflers
and just have the shop do the rest

did you have an odd fire v6? if so do you have it still
i am looking for a 2 barrel intake/carb/aircleaner/350 trans bracket
    for my 225 v6

    Andy,

Thanks for the info. and advice, I have been looking around for deals and in some of the magazines, such as summit for example, but I am not sure what's going to happen just yet. I will let you all know my final decision wether I stick with the narrow but almost only option I have or if I find another solution.

About the V6, I still have it but it was stalling out, spitting, sputtering and doing all kinds of crazy things due to the carb. going bad. I can check for the intake, although it may have a crack/leak in it. The air cleaner assembly-I have no clue where I put it at but I can look for it though. 350 trans. bracket I am not sure on yet either, but once again I can look for you. Thanks again Andy,

Cody, your price might really might be pretty good. It depends on how much work is required to install hangers, etc. Mine already was set up for dual exhaust and all the
existing hangers were already there. Welcome to the old car expense train!
Keep plugging along, eventually you will get there where you can do small improvements a little at a time when wallet can take it.

    Hey Roger,

I hear 'ya man, I think one of the main reasons for it being so highly-priced is the fact that they have to remove the old studs from the manifolds and install new ones, and as well they have to hook up quite a bit, as I removed the exhaust system completely. Nothing there but the manifolds, so it is a 100 percent pure open exhaust. :Dou: The crossover isn't even on! Just the manifolds is all...I know it isn't doing my wallet any good now, but hey, I gotta use this car for a daily driver and to get a job part time, as I am in school right now too. So this car has got to be useful and reliable! With the 350, I get the best of all worlds. I get a V8, it's got 62k original miles, 350 cubic inches, Buick Torque and horsepower, and best of all, that signature v8 sound.......... :bglasses: What more could a guy ask for? :TU: The timing has been advanced, and I am running it right now w/out vaccum advance, I am not sure when I should hook that back up, I guess not untill I have timing set back a little bit. I need to find the idle screw on the carb. yet and tune it down a bit as it idles kinda high in park even after the choke has engaged, which doesn't bother me but I just prefer a tad bit lower idle speed is all.

With all that your price isn't bad.
Since the crossover isn't there, wonder how much extra it would be to do duals?
Might not be that much more and you will eventually want to do that I'm sure.
It would really sound good too.

Roger, they said if I were to supply the mufflers that dual exhaust would cost around 550 or so which just is not in the funds, but a future goal yes! I supplied the cherry bomb muffler for the single exhaust now. Definetly some future plans for the car, I gotta use whatever's left of my money to do an oil change on the engine and a fill up the tank of gas and possibly get some new plugs soon. Thinking if I can find some Bosch platinum plugs then I might use those as I have some buddies w/ 350 Chevy V8's that are using them and they say that the platinum plugs are worth their money.

could always go with a jegs 2 1/2 dual exahust with turbo mufflers, they sound great on my engine. Think theyre around 170. and as much as I hate to suggest it get a set of downpipes from TA for around 80. I do have headers so don't know what the mufflers sound like with manifolds though.

Thanks Dan. As the saying goes, "all good things are worth waiting for". I drove it to school today and have been taking some cruises in it just for fun and it rides and drives good. I am surprised at the torque the motor has. I got sideways in it today leaving from a stopsign, lol! :eek2: :3gears: :TU: I am not going to hotrod this car around so much as I really want and need it as a daily driver more than a toy, although I do plan to slowly transform it into both maybe in the near future. Right now though I still have some problems I need to work out. First of all, the mechanic that set the timing said he had advanced it a bit, and to leave off the vaccum advance, but I have the vaccum advance connected as it seems to run much smoother with it connected than without it. Secondly, the engine seems to want to still keep running even after I turn it off, as it keeps turning over after I turn the ignition off. Thirdly, I had an oil change done on it and I am using valvoline SAE 10W-30 oil, and it is leaking a few drops when I put it into park and shut it off, it is not the filter now I know, because I changed the filter during the oil change and my only other thought is something to do with the pump? :Do No: Fourthly, I forgot to connect the overflow tank with the cap and the line, and I drove it maybe 4 or 5 times and only this last time I parked it in the driveway did it shoot antifreeze out of the hole that is coming out by the radiator cap, it went all over the front-right side of my engine bay and onto the ground! :Dou: This is either a 2 or 3 core radiator, and I didn't even have the a/c on, as I have no a/c what-so-ever! :Smarty: :Do No: And now sometimes on startup I notice it uses a tad bit of oil........what could be going on w/ these quirks? :Do No:

    Thanks,

    -Cody

Well guys, I think I can figure out maybe why it's leaking oil, but I still can't seem to figure out why the engine still wants to run(turn over) after I shut it off. Any ideas?

    Any help is greatly appreciated,

    Thanks,
