The other day I get a call from a friend telling me his neighbors 65 Chevy P/U 12 bolt needs a 4.10 installed and asked if I had time to do it. I had just finished his Nova 12 bolt prior, so I said sure. He told me the guy had disassembled it but didn't know how to set it up correctly and would probably load it on a trailer to bring it over. Fast FWD to the good part. I see the truck coming down my street hooked to a raggety old tow truck and my first thought is it must have C-clip eliminators or the axles would've come out, but then as it gets closer and I hear a distinct noise, reality sets in! :eek2: As it is backed into the drive and the rear wheels lock and slide I'm thinking (insert explitive here) :Dou: because sure enough the cover is off and the gears are just thrown back in it. Has to be the DUMBEST move I've ever seen. Now he could've left the pinion out at least, although the carrier brgs. still would've been toasted but he said he wanted to make sure I got it the same way he took it apart!! :spank: Well to say the least, the good 3.73 R&P is now a sharp edged, pretty bluish-purple color, the bearings are fried, the carrier is gouged severly enough that the cross shaft bolt which was hand tightened was broke off and the cross shaft which wil turn 360 can't even be driven out.
This all could've been avoided if he had not wanted to do it cheap! If there is a moral to this story I'd say its just spend the $100-$200 to have your differential properly set up. Its "cheaper" in the long run.
He's since picked up another rear (12 bolt 3.73 posi) that I will be installing his 4.10 gear and all new brgs and seals. Gotta love it...Tim :TU:
