A Holley DP with 4 corner idle. Don't worry, the carb is not holding you back, it is tires. Your not running out of gas it isn't a 455 you have plenty. 390 gear would be better than a 323 and a 4 speed auto. My 350 did not like anything past 32 on timing.

after reading through your comments. You stated that the engine feels like it is running out of steam? When does it feel like it is running out of steam? does it feel like the power abruptly falls off or does it feel like it wants to keep pulling but just seems out of breath?

Traction has nothing to do with mph you can spin half the track and still mph extremely close to the cars full potential at that given time, will a DP Holley be a magic cure maybe not but it will improve the responsiveness, feel and in this instance im willing to bet horsepower. Vacuum Holleys and Edelbrocks are door stops as far as im concerned thats just me tho. I love Qjets but when it comes to tryn get the most out of a setup its mechanical Holley or go home, but if your gonna spend money on a carb at the very least get a HP mainbody or equivalent chokes are sissys , I loved the two Race Demons I had ,very aggressive fuel curve and very snappy, billet baseplates and blocks are cool and all but not really needed, biggest bang for the buck is the Proform,QuickFuel, and Mighty Demon lots of carb for good bit less than a true HP Holley

yeah ... but, isn't this like 95% or more street car ? Have Mark or Kenny G whip you up a Qjet to fit your build. Later, if you want, you can go to a Holley or whatever for those trips to the track. FYI - Larry only picked up a tenth or so switching to his AED1000 from the Qjet.

One more thing - I posted on your Facebook thread that I went 12.8's with 1.85 60' times with BigRed (556hp/560tq) on my highway radials .. learning how to do this is KEY to playing on the street where there's no burn-out box or compound-prepped launch pad and the drag radials are home. The real pro's at this are the F.A.S.T. racers and Greg Gessler is the one who taught me its more about finesse and learning to control your car and feeding it what it can handle than mashing the Go pedal and holding on for the ride. Sure, thats fun with drag radials or full slicks at the track but 95% of the time your on greasy asphault when blowing the tires away will have a 16 sec. Honda laughing at you

Have a look at the 15X10 summit racing wheels they are low cost and really help spread out the drag radials... Look into a Mickey Thompson 295/55/15 drag radial they fit PERFECT with no mods to the fenders or rubbing!

Thanks for the tip on wheels and tires Sean! I wanna try and see how quick I can go with my 350 combo, sooooo many things to consider, LOL, but trying to stick to "one change at a time"
I feel theres some of power Im leaving on the table, is it the carb? Is it timing? Gotta tinker with both!
A lot of cars feel quick on the street, but the track tells the true tale:grin:

Did you check you accel cable to see if your opening the secondarys all the way? If that's good then cut the vacuum spring for them. Make them drop sooner

You should be going 99 mph like I am. I went 13.65 with the 510 cam and 101mph. I still break 79-80 in the 1/8 with the smaller Lunati cam. With the 413 cam you should be running a 373 gear. I needed a 410 gear and a 3800 stall You have a bigger cam or at least equal to mine.(Lunati cam).

If you go back with the street tires you can try to take the air pressure down to about 22 lbs. When you see the yellow lights coming down you want to leave on the last yellow and this will give you your best reaction time to the light. You can get around the water if they did not drown it too much you can drive around it. But if not just roll thru slowly till you get to the dry area and go through fist and second gear some and this will get all the water off the tires. The street tires hold water so you have to get it off. You don't have to fry them just go through first to about 4500 and then get out of it and move up. Then get yer butt up to those lights and get them on, hold to 1200rpm and when you see that last yellow step on the gas softly as it is being planted to the floor, do this almost all at once.

Got a spacer under that Holley put a 1 incher on there. IF you have a 2 incher go up 2 jets on the carb. Do you know what jets are in the carb.

I have a 1" 4 hole spacer under the carb.
If I can duplicate my first run as far as reaction time and leaving the line, Im betting I'll be heading in the right direction, I wanna try to get my mph up.
The second run, as I said, the water was nearly across the whole lane and driving around it was almost impossible, When I did my short (or so I was expecting) burn out, the trans shifted 1...2...3..., spinning the tires, I thought to myself, damn spinning in third, it must be slippery, well when I went to leave and the car slewed sideways, I thought this is like grease:shock:
My wife commented that she noticed dew on the rear spoiler before my second run, and Im curious if the track crew addresses this on test and tune night.
Either way, Im determined to get my GS into the 14's, and hopefully lower!
Im motivated by you guys that are running 350's:TU:
Im gonna tune, then test, repeat.................... gogogogogo:laugh:

If you spin the stock tires too much they will get too hot and get slippery. Plus, if you start to spin them too fast the water that is left in the treads will get up into the wheel well and drips back onto the tire, then you spin again. Spin the stock tires but not too hard and not too long. Take air out, this will help, some.

Best way to tell if air pressure is good with stock tires is to do a short burnout with cold tires and observe pavement for uniform contact patch. Dark in the middle remove air. Still won't be a effective as using something stickier. Just don't heat them up too much at the track and avoid the water, as you already know. Glad to see so much buzz about the 350 I'm about 2 years away from starting mine, have to finish the family obligations. College enough said.

I just checked my box the Holley carb came in, I have the packet that had #80 jets, theres #76 in the pack now, so I believe I put #80 in the rear, its been a few years since I messed with 'em
Found out from a buddy of mine at work that races an 8 sec. bike that Thompson Drag Raceway runs later in the season than Norwalk does, so if I get rained out this last Friday of the season at Norwalk I can still give 'er hell at Thompson for awhile longer!
I'll have a better winter knowing the car has more in her than a 15.03 @ 89mph!!

The 350 is a pretty good screamer! Its no slouch, and it definatley WAY out torques a small block Chevy!
Honestly, the biggest advantage a Chevy has is the aftermarket support, but us Buick guys, especially us 350 guys have to do it with ALOT of stock parts, and to me that's the fun of it

You may not have as much compression as you think. My stock 71 had 8.5 and when I had the 268 Comp cam in I ran what you are running now. I had the stock stall in the trans and was running the 373 gears and 28" tire. Back in 1991, Ouch!

You may not gain much in the mph in the 1/4 unless you were really going real late down the track but usually even though you spin the tires the mph in the 1/4 does not change much.

If you go to Thompson I might try to get up that way I am in the Ravenna area.

How high are you running the motor before you shift?

That 413 should let you shift at 6 grand. Bottom balanced or anything?
