sharkmonkey Give me something to hit!

Can I put a tranny from an 85 GN in to my 85 Regal? I know it will fit but the GN has a floor shifter and my Regal has a steering column shifter. Will I have trouble with the cabling, etc?

Will it shift in to all 4 speeds as well?

    Thanks in advance.

if the column is a 3 speed, you won't have access to 1st gear. D will be OD, 2 will be D, and 1 will be 2.:Dou:

what kind of tranny is in there now? with the 200r4 the last owner put in my car, it appears to have a completely stock column linkage.

Whatever stock tranny came in the 85 Regal. I have heard it is the 200r4 but not sure. My brother has two 85 GN trannys, one is slipping. He said I could have the slipping one if I wanted to get it serviced then drop it in my car.

I guess I could go to the junkyard and get a floor shift console. :Do No:

This is not true. I have done quite a few tranny swaps between various cars.
GM seemed to keep the travel arc pretty much the same on all their trannies.
Your stock shifter should still give you all the gears, Park will be park, low will be low.
We did the 200-4r swap into a 66 lark that had a t-300 2 speed, the factory column shifter worked fine, the car now has a t-400 s-p in it, the same factory column shifter still handles the task beautifully. Jim Burek

    So...
When the appropriate speed is met, the gear will shift to OD or 4th even though my column shifter only has L1, L2 and D?

    I appreciate your input.

jim - believe me, i'm VERY sure i don't have a manual first gear. ;)

i have exactly 6 gears when i rack though all of them...once i'm all the way to the right, it's the end of the road.:Do No:

    So my question still is...

When I put the car in "D", will it start in 1st and shift all the way to 4th or OD? Or will it get stuck in 3rd?

    Thanks,

you will definately half both a OD (4) and a D (3) in the shift pattern.

the debatable part is whether or not your low gear will get bumped off.

I really don't care about physically shifting in to 1st gear, as long as the transmission starts in 1st when I start from a stopped position, then sequentially shifts to 4th.

I'll never be pulling a trailer up and down hills with this car and I don't do much of the "auto shifting".

    2004r

85 most regals had a 2004r in anyways but it should fit you might have to work with the crossmember but extra boltholes in frame to move cross back should be there on left side.i was told the cross will work but not sure as i used a custom cross for duals made by gforce on the east coast. and most of the shift linkage is the same.:TU:

    Re: 2004r

We just scrapped out an 85 regal, it had a metric 200, not a 200-4r. Jim Burek
