Something I was thinking of…. This has an old school alarm system in it…. All of the wiring is under the dash…. Could/ do these old systems have kill switches in them?

They usually interrupt the purple solenoid wire. That would prevent the starter from cranking the engine.

    Or in the ignition switch.

There still could possibly be weak voltage getting to the coil, which is why I asked if he checked voltage at the + side of the coil. If zero volts, then we definitely have an open line. But I gotta know....for me. lol

Sounds like the main B+ feed/resistance wire for the coil is open.. It starts and then dies when you let off the key, because with the starter engaged, the coil is fed by the R terminal on the starter. This resistor bypass is in place for easier hot starting.

When you release the key, and the starter drive kicks back out of the flexplate, it moves the copper disc inside the solenoid and that opens the connection to the R terminal. That wire goes dead, and the car stalls, because you now have no voltage to the coil.

Get a test light, and figure out where the open is. Start on the inside of the car in the fusebox, at the terminal that says ING on it. It should be hot with the key on.
