Just wondering if anyone would happen to know what gears my 66 lesabre would have? Its a 2 door hartop 340 2 speed. Pretty sure its not posi and they seem liek extreme highway gears.

Well I bought a posi 4:11 rear end out of a 70 chevelle a few months ago cause I got a hell of a deal and figured if I cant make it work I can turn around and sell it anyways. Havnt been able to measure my axle in the buick yet cause its in storage about 2 hours from where I am so I dont know if its close to being usable but was just wondering if it measures up ok what should I be looking at in terms of installing this thing? Any common mistakes people make I should be looking for?

    Thanks guys

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

The 70 Chevelle will be an 8.2" rear and you will sell it.

The rear you have in the Buick is 9 3/8 or 8 7/8" I believe.
Anyways, you will not find the posi for that car.

'65-67 LeSabres used the 8.2 BOP LH thread gear set shared with...

    - '64-67 Skylarks
    - '64-early '67 Olds F85, Cutlasses, and 442's
    - '64-69 LeMans and Tempests
    - '67-69 Firebird
    - '69 GrandPrixs

While new 3.55, 3.90, and 4.10 ratio gearsets are avail from Richmond for a little over 250 bucks, they require the low ratio carrier and not everyone desires tsuch a low ratio gear.

    A typical '66 LeSabre should have either 2.56's, 2.78's or possibly 2.93's.
New mid ratio posi carriers are avail for the 2.93's. Desiring slightly lower ratio 8.2 ''Pontiac'' gears, one will have to search for low mile used 3.08 or 3.23 gears, then take a chance on them. Early last week I pulled a nice set of 3.23's out of a '67 Sportwagon. By Saturday they were being set-up in a '69 GrandPrix housing, I had previously robbed the 3.23's and 4 pinion posi out of. Nice used 3.23's and 3.36's don't last long, and being used, they are often a crap shoot :(

8.2 "Pontiac" 3.90 & 4.10 gearsets are avail new from Richmond. For a low ratio 8.2 "Pontiac" posi carrier, one will have a choice between:
    - Auburn Proseries,
    - Eaton,
    - good used or rebuilt 4 pinion Safe-T-Track.

With all new quality bearings, races, seals, & pro installation, looking @ close to $1000 with new RW507GR axle bearings... More if your axles are chewed up under the axle bearings :( If your future intentions are to remove the 340, & go back in with a really strong nailhead or built 455, it would be better to not put money in the Buick 8.2, but to start saving for a custom built 9" (expect 2K+ with nodular case, tracklok, & fabbed upper arms. Hope this does not confuse you, it's just nice to have the options spread out in front of you before spending $$$.

Believe you can use Chevy 8.2 10 bolt gears in the BOP 8.2 10 bolt rear using the right BOP carrier. You'll have to use the Chevy 8.2 pinion flange, then go to an adaptor u-joint . I'm not sure on which pinion seal, it's been a long time since I've run across this swap. The local fellow that did this was regularly blowing up 8.2 rears in his '65 GTO, so I did not pay much attention :Brow:

    66 buicklesabre...

I had planned on installing a 12 bolt posi from a 68 chevelle into my 65 lesabre... but the problem is the lower control arm mounts and the coil
spring mounts on the chevy rear do not line-up with the wider buick rear.
If you want a steeper gear ..I have a set of 390 gears which were in my
    65 lesabre.
If you are interested let me know...
