I have a 72 GS350 Convertible with a 2004R trans and 3.42 posi rear. At a certain rpm, especially 40 to 50 mph, I hear this annoying whine. None on wind down or up, just steady driving... GRRRR...

Had it rebuilt 3 times and even went with Syntetic gear oil. Helped, but still there. I think its a Auburn gear set.

Considering finding a stock 3.73 posi, but dont what to scream on the highway again which is the reason for the 2004R.

    Help!!

If the faces of the ring and pinion took a pattern, rebuilding it won't stop all the noise. Some gears are just noisy like the old Richmonds.
With the overdrive, the 3.73s should be fine on the highway. You are probably looking about 200-300 rpm more at the most.
