I'm new to the group and posted this question in the Wet Behind the Ears section before finding this list. I recently bought the factory gauges for my 71 to replace the idiot lights for the oil and water. I changed the sending units to the ones needed for gauges, and plugged all the factory wires back into the new gauge. I can't get them to work, are there wiring changes needed?

The factory gauge wiring is different than for the lights. There should have been an adapter wire harness that plugs to the gauge pod and then to the dash harness on the 71-72 package.
If you got a 70 gauge pod, you will either need to locate the adapter harness or re-wire the dash plug end.
I did mine ages ago and had to remove the wires from the plug end and put them in the correct order. The 70 chassis manual has the wire order somewhere in it.
Maybe someone else on the board has done this swap recently and can give you some help.
    Good luck,
    Mark

stg1gs455, Post your name, we are a friendly group here. Now to your question. You need to rearrange the wires in the harness that plugs into the gauge cluster. You can push the individual wires out of the connector with a cotter pin or other tool. If you look at the connector from the side where the wires go in, the order for idiot lights, from left to right is, gray-green-blue-tan-black-pink-Dk brown-tan/white. The order for gauges is green-dk brown-no wire in 3rd position-pink-tan/white-blue-tan-gray. Since you eliminate the black wire for the idiot lights, you must ground the gauge cluster. Run a separate wire from the gauge cluster to a good metal ground. This conversion was the subject of a GS Extra article in the July/August 1994 Edition. Good luck.
