    Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions about what kind of gasket sealers to use on my big block motor.

    1. pan gasket. does the sealer that you all recommend need to be placed on the block as well as the top of the gasket?
    2. Does this hold true for the timing cover gasket?
I have heard a lot of different opinions about this especially what kind of sealer to use.

    Last question,
I am rebuilding this motor and am close to finishing it up.
When I place the distributor in the motor at tdc and aligin the marks to zero on the balancer, is there a ball park location relative to the timing cover or intake to where I have some advance dialed in by my manually rotating the distributor prior to firing up the motor for the first time?

    Thank you,
    Jon Thomas

    Jon,
Everyone has their favorite gasket cement, I like Permatex copper coat or high tack(red) in a spray can. I put gasket cement on both sides of the gasket.
As far as timing goes, looking at the harmonic balancer from the front of the motor, if you measure 1 3/4" clockwise from the timing mark, and make a new mark, this corresponds to 30*, if you line that mark up with the 0 on the timing tab, that is 30*, with 2 on the tab, thats 32 and so on. Hope that helps.
