Gas tank straps

Were the gas tank straps originally zinc plated or natural steel? If natural steel, what is the best way to restore the straps?

Zinc plated. Someone is making new ones. I believe www.nationalpartsdepot.com carries them for Chevelles for $30-40/set

 

Mine were semi gloss black.

I believe George is correct and the best option is to buy new.

 

Year One also sells gas tank straps in stainless. They are only listed in the Chevelle catalogue. SST4 was the part if I remember correctly. I bought a set and shined them up prior to installing them. They do look good! And I won't ever have to worry about them rusting.
