I have a 72 Skylark 350 2 BBL . I have this problem that when I get a full up of gas I will get a strong smell of gas when I am driving the car . Does anyone know what might cause this problem , and also what I might do to fix the problem . Thanks for the help . Dave

sounds to me like you gas tank vent system is not working properly.

Are you getting any wet spots under the car when you fill up?

It could be coming from a few sources:

The gasket where the fuel pickup connects to the tank, return line, or even the gas cap. There are a few places where the metal lines are connected with rubber hoses that will crack and leak after many years of use. Do you see any "wet" fuel on the tank or spots where fuel has dripped from under the car? That is usually a give away as to what is leaking. I am sure that you have looked under the hood and don't see any leaks. Look at the flexible lines that connect to the fuel pump, supply and return.

    Good luck! :)

I have a similar problem on my "new" daily driver. An '88 88. My grandmother even had the tank replaced at one point. It turned out, as LaMarr said, one of the rubber lines - I think it is a large one connecting the tank to the filler neck.

You'll have to fill it up, take it right home, and get under the car to find it.

Ck the charcoal cannister for saturation.

The 72 models have a big cannister with 3 or 4 lines above the gas tank. probably one of the rubber lines. It could also be a bad gas cap (believe it or not)
