Happy veteran's day to all those that apply. My hat goes off to those brave men and women who have served this wonderful country where I can drive my old a** gas guzzling car on our beautiful roads! A question about gas in my 67' Skylark. I was just wondering what type of gas is best for running in my car. Right now I use just regular unleaded(which the quality we get on base here is questionable to begin with) plus adding a bit of lead additive because of the fact I didn't have hardened exhaust valve seats installed during the rebuild, and it seems to run like crap. It is basically all stock still with the 340 and st300 behind it. With the stock compression at 10.25-1(advertised, not tested) what type of gas should I run? I was suggested to run a higher octane by friends, but thought I should check the opinions of actual Buick guys before shelling out the dough for the gas prices. Thanks.

  2. You should be running premium 92-93 with that kind of compression.

I run premium in my 10.25 motor...92-93 octane. It doesn't ping when I have the carb tuned right...or at least I can't hear it...

Thanks guys, I just wanted to be sure before I tried it. I fill my Lark' up with regular down here and it runs me close to 30.00 when it's completely empty. I feel sorry for the northern folks where the gas is OUTRAGEOUS!

    Amen for the troops!

I don't know for sure but you may not need the lead additive because of the material your block is made out of. I know I don't for my '68 350 motor.

You should run the higher premium fuel with that compression but is your timing set correctly?

Yes my car's timing is set correctly. I ran the car just about dry and filled her up with 93 octane, run a little better! No pinging going on right now, thanks.

You probably have no or very little valve recession anyway. The lead additive should help you in other ways, too, so I wouldn't stop using it, but the Buick engines used high quality alloys that a lot of other GMs and valve recession seems to be a very small problem even for guys with unhardened valve seats and unleaded gas.
