I think so, all depends on the float in the tank, if the gas sloshes the float will move in turn moving the needle.

At least thats they way I think it works LOL :Smarty:
    mine does the same thing...

New sending unit probably wont help. Wont hurt though.
You will probably see the gauge move when you are going up or down a hill also if the tank is at least half empty.

There may be capacitance built into the circuit to dampen needle movement, it may be shot. Problem is I don't know if it's in the sender or the gage.

As far as I can remember, all the cars of the era did that even when they were much younger.
Might be worth a little research to see if there is any circuitry built in that can be fixed if the needle sway bothers you.
If it's in the float I will probably know next spring. I am going to drop my 45 year old tank over the winter and clean and seal it. I'll replace the sender and whatever else makes sense when I do it, that is unless I get distracted by finding more stuff that needs attention when some of the car that hasn't seen the light of day for nearly half a century is exposed.

While on the subject, does anyone know the capacity of the tank?
When my needle is swaying over empty, I'll put about 10 gallons in, then it hovers over full... obviously my gauge is hot highly accurate.

In my 72 I ran empty for this very reason of wanting ro know how much gas will the tank hold. I filled up with a little over 15 u.s. gal

cool, so its not that bad really, if my needle is swaying over empty I still may have 2-3 gallons. So when I add 10, it puts me very close to full...

    tks man!

Mine used to sway over E... till I burned a donut locked up and took off. Now the gas needle come just to e before I'm empty :spank:

Curtis, I believe your GS has a capacity right around 20 US gallons.

That is normal. My 1972 Skylark did the same thing. The gas gauge has a very long sweep compared to other cars. Don't waste your money on the sender.

That's fairly typical of a lot of cars. My Z's do it and even the
Hayabusa does, when I'm in deep in a turn. I wouldn't worry
    too much about it.

I put a brand new sending unit in mine about a year ago and it still sways all over. It doesn't bother me,:3gears: I like watching it sometimes..
