I retired this spring and am in the process of building the retirement home we all dream of. Kids grown wife moved on don't need the 2400 square foot house any more. A mobile home will do just fine it's the garage that has been my goal. 40x60 slab formed up and ready to pour building goes up about two weeks later. My cousin on seeing the floor plan dubbed it the garagemahall. I come here to find others who see the logic in this.
Good going! If I had that kinda space, that would be the slab for the day help quarters LOL... 12 foot ceilings (minimum), with the "man loft" upstairs. Maybe a nice enclosed deck on the back for an observatory... the possibilities are endless. For me? Id like a giant boat house with accomodations for life attached. The only holdback for me is the fundage. Carry on... WITH FERVOR! ws
Noice! I'd love to do something like that. I don't see a problem with it. You have no real obligations other than yourself, so why not! Can you share the floorplan with us?
Is that visqueen down before they pour the cement? It'll stop the moisture from coming threw. The cement guys will hate you cause the cement will take longer to dry, from topside only.
Looking good John. Now you and Glen are retired.....maybe you guys can start a little business restoring Buicks
The visqueen under the concrete is code here. Prevents radon gas buildup in the building. My floor plan is hand drawn on graph paper so can't post here. Plan on a shop 30' deep and 28' wide on the gable end. Storage behind the shop with a roller door in back shop wall and room to store pickup with trailer attached beside it. Will put up more pictures as things progress. Lon it's hard to believe Glenn and I are both retired seams like we were just a couple of shop rats last year hoping to get good jobs when we graduated. Still remember the day he got the GSX. He flicked history class to pick it up as I remember.
Thats going to be awesome! You will love it! I did a 40x40 where I live now. Its next to a 32x35 garage my dad built. It works, but I have way too much sh*t. I plan on a 40x80 and also a 4 bay next to the house when I move in the next year. Been looking at property everyday for the last 5 months.
Funny that's what I call my shop. The garagemahall. It's a 40x40. The original structure is a horsebarn from the late 1800s. Its post and beam thats hand hewned. Modernized of course.
My barn is 2,500 sq ft and it’s filling fast. It was already here when we bought the house. It’s taking some time and money but it’s coming together. Not exactly what I would have built but way to nice to replace. Money goes quickly. KID
We moved from Nevada to Montana a little over a year ago, the only thing in Nevada I miss besides my friends is my 24X24 shop. A 40X60 would be even better!
Never have enough garage / shop space. When we built the house I put up a 24 x 36 2 story 3 bay garage. Didnt take long for that to fill up. Next I poured 3 more slabs for parking. Its hot here in Fl so that had to be covered. 4 years ago another 30 x 40 was started behind the garage. Took 3 years to save the the money for each step. Now its covered and Im dreaming of just concreting the rest of that part of the yard which would probably be another 80 x 100. More space ya get the more crap you collect. I like the idea of just building a giant metal building with living quarters inside. Have 5 acres on a attached separate lot that may one day hold that building. Also like the way you phrased "the wife moved on" LOL
Love those garages. We moved 14 years ago because I wanted a shop/garage and I couldn't build one where we were due to overhead power lines and neighbors. The place we are now had 3/4 acre lot with a big backyard and I put up a 32x28 3-stall stick-built garage with 12'8" ceiling. It has insulation, heat/air, hot water, shower and a toilet. I figured I could live here if the wife kicked me out or I could rent it to a college kid if I get too old to fool with Buicks. Unfortunately, I never did get a lift and it is now full of stuff. Two Buicks, a lawnmower and everything to support them. I added a small storage shed to house the spare parts that aren't as environmentally fragile. Back of the lot before Immediately after it was finished, note the frost burned off the roof where the ductwork runs. And as it appeared a few years ago with blacktop, overflow shed and my "other" GS 350.
If your planning on putting in a 2 post lift, make sure to pour the concrete thicker in that area. I'd always thought about buying some land somewhere, putting up a big building like you're doing, and finishing in a loft area for living in. Yours looks to be starting off nice.
Absolutely, go with it! Years ago I purchased 3 acres with the idea of building a big garage with living space in one corner. It never did pan out, though. You're in the perfect position to do it, so why not?
